Bragging that you are the one who hoarded up all of the toilet paper and hand sanitizer is way worse. I bet you have a drawer full of masks and gloves, too.

What a smarty britches you are.

You’re talking to several different people, hon. But I don’t think anyone’s sorry to have stocked their pantry while you went on your cruise. Choices.

I know someone who went on a cruise that departed in early March. Super smart person, absolutely should have known better, and there were lots of people questioning the decision to go. I think people hear what they want to hear, even very smart people.

In this case, the whole thing ended badly, with sick patients on board and the other passengers quarantined in their staterooms for many days. They were furious - not at the cruise company but at the US Government for the time it took to extricate them. Deflected blame, much?

Where did this happen? Did the cruise ship originate from the U.S.?

I've kept my pantry stocked as a habit ever since 9-11. So the toilet paper hoarders and all their craziness did not create a problem for me - thank goodness.

I enjoyed my cruise and still had toilet paper in my pantry. Lucky me.

This purposeful ignorance and/or blatant lying drives me insane.

She’s right, though. For the vast majority of Americans, no one was freaking out about this until the night with the triple whammy of Trump Oval Office speech/ Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson diagnosed/ NBA players tested positive and they canceled the season.

There is a big difference between “freaking out” and getting on a cruise...

The fact that there were a ton of cruise ships debarking from the U.S, on March 7th and pretty much none of them had any Coronavirus outbreaks means that those passengers did a better job of assessing risk than the passengers who cancelled did. They missed out on a really beautiful trip. I feel bad for them.

Haha. Is that what you’re telling yourself?

Yes. You were wrong and I'm sorry that you overreacted and cancelled your vacation plans. You missed out!

I didn’t cancel anything. People who went on a cruise in March 2020 were reckless. Maybe they got lucky but they certainly took a huge risk for something that could have been rescheduled.

What month would you reschedule to?

I’d take the credits and wait to see how everything plays out.

LOL. As if that somehow matters.

I think this aggressive ignorance is why I’ll never take a cruise. Imagine being stuck on a boat with a bunch of dumba$$es.

What is the body count? How many dead? How many recovered? This is an interesting case study. Let them be at sea, drop them medicine and food and see who survives and who dies.

Not true. I cancelled a February trip to Vegas because of the coronavirus. I knew that between the handles on the slot machines, crowded casinos, and open buffets, and high concentration of Chinese tourist I had a good chance of catching the virus. And yes I lost money on my vacation package. It’s been in the news since January, but it was really in the news in February when that Diamond Cruise ship was stranded in Japan. People chose to ignore what was there to be seen.

THIS. I too canceled a Vegas trip for a conference that would have happened Feb 26-28. At that point we had canceled incoming direct flights from China, but I still thought it was a bad idea bc tons of direct flights come into Vegas from all over Asia; nor would it be impossible to go from say China to Singapore and then fly to Vegas direct from there.

PP your decision was what it was, and I'm glad you had fun. But by no means was life 100% normal on March 7. From March 2-Mar 6, there was tons of talk in my (government) office that we'd be going FT telework in a week to 10 days. On the weekend of March 7-8, I know I REALLY dreaded going back into the office March 9 esp the commute, but that Sunday night I told myself to go because I needed to get stuff from my office just in case we turned to telework. During the day on March 9 is when Cuomo in NYC (who I have been following for general guidance that is applicable outside of NYC) told people to stay off the subway as much as they can. That really made me feel like this was 100% real bc having lived in NYC for 10 years and only moved to DC 3 yrs ago, that disgusting NYC subway is the crown jewel for NYers -- they NEVER say not to take the subway; so it made it very real that there was danger in being in confined spaces with lots of others -- whether Metro or flights or cruise ships.

Left the office Monday Mar 9 mentally kind of saying -- I'm not coming back in for a few weeks even if we don't officially go WFH; sort of said that to my young (ages 28-32 yr old, healthy) colleagues and they sort of agreed but sort of acted like I was paranoid. And then by the time I got home that night we had an email from the chair of the agency -- someone in our 1800 person building is being tested so they're strongly "advising" telework -- and then that advice became mandatory about 2 days later when someone else was tested. So yeah -- it wasn't normal life on March 7. And hell by Mar 7, my shopping for food etc was DONE -- as I had started stocking up on February 7.

Umm, you see no difference between a cruise originating from a U.S. port and a cruise originating from Japan or Argentina. They all carry the same exact amount of risk in your mind....that explains why you are so terrified.

Any cruise in March 2020 exceeds the acceptable risk level for anyone who was paying attention.

Where was the boat previously? The crew? The other passengers?

I’m not terrified at all because I don’t make reckless decisions like that.

Yeah, it would have been so much more fun to stay at home and run stealth missions to the store to buy up all of the toilet paper. You all really know how to live don't you?

Call me reckless and wild and crazy for going on a cruise. I really don't care. Neither did my fellow passengers - we all had a blast.

And reasonably intelligent. Which does not seem to be a strong trait for cruisers.

I hope the PP who enjoyed the recent cruise wasn’t an asymptomatic carrier of covid who spread it around her community upon returning.
