A very high bar indeed, but... not impossible.

What are chances a new candidate is being vetted right now? Would Nikki go for it at this point or would Pence be in the fight?

Would-be candidates are putting out feelers and the GOP is mulling over all options. The first one is still, unfortunately, to deny and defend the President. They're just monitoring public opinion to find out whether that can last them until the election.

I am as anti-Trump as you can get but you are all deluded. I just stated this to my DH (liberal, me not a liberal) this morning. He's not called Teflon Don for nothing.

You are all thinking like a person who has common sense and a reasonable level of ethics and morals. Trump has neither of those qualities. He's a bit of a sociopath, and he WILL.NOT.GO.DOWN without a huge fight and stink. He know his base will cause chaos if he were to be impeached or pushed out by Rs. He thrives on this kind of chaos.

Don't delude yourselves. Until I literally see/hear that Trump has resigned, I'm not holding my breath.

I’m a Dem but agree. The man literally has no shame. He will never resign.

Don’t forget that he has NPD. Their entire motivation is avoiding shame and feeling better about themselves. And he is a big ol’ quitter when he feels it’s in his best interest.

First Republican member of Congress voices support for Trump impeachment probe

Rep. Mark Amodei on Friday became the first Republican member of Congress to publicly support the impeachment inquiry into President Trump.

“Using government agencies to, if it’s proven, to put your finger on the scale of an election, I don’t think that’s right,” Amodei, who represents Nevada’s Second Congressional District, told the Nevada Independent. “If it turns out that it’s something along those lines, then there’s a problem.”

“Following that call, Nevada Independent reporter Humberto Sanchez released an article. The first paragraph of Mr. Sanchez’s article reads: ‘Rep. Mark Amodei supports the House’s inquiry into whether President Donald Trump should be impeached, but is withholding judgment on whether Trump has crossed the legal line.’

Amodel is not yet supporting impeachment but supports impeachment inquiry... Let us stay focus and post signs of GOP change of heart...

Right. If it came down to it, he'd quit in exchange for a pardon from Pence, and spend the rest of his life fighting, impeding and buying off New York prosecutors.

He can't cut a deal with the NY AG.

But he can spend the rest of his life fighting in court.

I don’t think he has the money to fight state charges.

I sort of agree - but, counterpoint, he's a habitual bankruptcy declarer: https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2016/live-updates/general-election/real-time-fact-checking-and-analysis-of-the-first-presidential-debate/fact-check-has-trump-declared-bankruptcy-four-or-six-times/

So he's clearly not above cutting his losses - and being proved a loser - when he sees it as advantageous to his interests.

I honestly have no idea how this story ends.

This bolded. If he can get out of this with no jail time and maybe a TV network he would do it. He'll declare that the Democrats won't let him enact the bills he wants (plays the victim) or declare some sort of victory about his wall (even though it will never be built) and move on.

To me, it's all about Mitch. Mitch wants to stay Senate leader. If Trump needs to go in order for Rs to keep the majority, he'll throw T under the bus.

They generally believe that if Warren is the nominee then Trump can win or if Warren wins. Warren has been demonized on the alr right as their 2nd poster child of an evil woman blah blah blah. They think that she is like Hillary. (I think they are wrong on this. Warren is a good campaigner and comes across as authentic to working class voters. The conspiracy and constant trashing of HRC worked because she came off as cold and calculating.) Regardless, they are hoping that Warren wins and convinced that if Biden gets the nomination then Trump is going down hard and they will probably lose the senate and house.

One scenario is to honestly impeach Trump and stop letting him tar them with the mainstream voters. This obviously doesn't fly with a Nunes hello type but for others they'll see it as a chance to get out from under Trump's stain. If they nominated Kaisch or someone else then they might have a chance against Biden. It will be a difficult campaign though as the R nominee would need to constantly answer questions on why he didn't do more to stop Trump and would need to keep disavowing many of Trump's racist statements and positions that turned off the mainstream. This would in turn piss off the Trumpsters who like Trump because of his racist positions.

Kaisch is the best candidate if Rs were to do this. He's been pretty consistent Never Trump and can't be asked why he didn't do anything. He was a private citizen. Rs will vote for him, abortion and guns and SCOTUS. FWIW, I'm a Warren fan and think if Kaisch got the GOP nomination, he could beat her. I'd rather she go up against Trump.

PP is right. And there is nothing of substance here to “take down”. It’s actually all pretty comical.

For once I find myself in agreement with the Trumpsters. There is nothing to see here. We have a couple of deeply concerned republican senators who when push comes to shove will not stand up to their party and do anything useful. We have a republican on record saying he supports an inquiry - he’ll probably end up voting against impeachment.

This is their very last chance to salvage their party.

+1 Pretty conservative voter here. I'd vote for Kasich in a heartbeat. I would consider Biden, but Warren is too liberal for me. And Schiff's dramatic reading of his imagined conversation was a dumb move.

Comical is indeed the perfect word.

If Dems hadn't spent 3 years crying wolf a million times we might find them more credible this time.
