1. Public opinion swings for impeachment in a major way, including for Republican voters, given how egregious and *easy to understand* this all is. 2. Senators vote to impeach and the GOP proudly unveils a new candidate for the 2020 election. A very high bar indeed, but... not impossible.
What are chances a new candidate is being vetted right now? Would Nikki go for it at this point or would Pence be in the fight?
Would-be candidates are putting out feelers and the GOP is mulling over all options. The first one is still, unfortunately, to deny and defend the President. They're just monitoring public opinion to find out whether that can last them until the election.
I am as anti-Trump as you can get but you are all deluded. I just stated this to my DH (liberal, me not a liberal) this morning. He's not called Teflon Don for nothing. You are all thinking like a person who has common sense and a reasonable level of ethics and morals. Trump has neither of those qualities. He's a bit of a sociopath, and he WILL.NOT.GO.DOWN without a huge fight and stink. He know his base will cause chaos if he were to be impeached or pushed out by Rs. He thrives on this kind of chaos. Don't delude yourselves. Until I literally see/hear that Trump has resigned, I'm not holding my breath.
I’m a Dem but agree. The man literally has no shame. He will never resign.
I sort of agree - but, counterpoint, he's a habitual bankruptcy declarer: https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2016/live-updates/general-election/real-time-fact-checking-and-analysis-of-the-first-presidential-debate/fact-check-has-trump-declared-bankruptcy-four-or-six-times/ So he's clearly not above cutting his losses - and being proved a loser - when he sees it as advantageous to his interests. I honestly have no idea how this story ends.
This bolded. If he can get out of this with no jail time and maybe a TV network he would do it. He'll declare that the Democrats won't let him enact the bills he wants (plays the victim) or declare some sort of victory about his wall (even though it will never be built) and move on. To me, it's all about Mitch. Mitch wants to stay Senate leader. If Trump needs to go in order for Rs to keep the majority, he'll throw T under the bus.
