3/26 Board of Ed meeting live thread

Churchill is fine. The overcapacity was an inaccurate projection.

Louder for those in the back. Parkway kids can still walk to Crown, they just need to leave a little earlier.

But you knew that. Besitas…

Actually it is. Churchill gets an influx of top students.

Do you mean Cold Spring? That’s hardly an influx. Grateful we are not more impacted, but a great result would have been utilisation in the low 90s

It was Montoya.

Her claims of racism are rich since she was the loudest voice in favor of closing the only Black-run charter in MCPS: MBLI.

She’s a fraud and a hypocrite. She doesn’t care about Black people. She’s just using them as a talking point to stick it to the people who are against the superintendent’s recommendation.

I fully support H.. that said, Montoya should be called out for saying what she did. Just because one doesn't support H doesn't mean they are racist. I mean, I'm sure there are black/brown parents who are against H, too.

IMO, Montoya is the racist.

That is really nasty. She should be censured for speaking of board members and parents like that.

I attended today’s meeting and have apparently wasted my time in countless previous meetings and consultant meetings to review options that were never considered. Today and at previous meetings, Rivera-Oven, Wolff, and Montoya basically called everyone opposed ”racist” and said their language was disgusting. I’m sure they’ve heard some rude things, but the only racism and rude language I’ve heard is from those three board members, who should be better than that. They were appalling.

Can someone please spell this out clearly for me? It passed that Wootton is going to move to Crown with the exception of Cold Spring going to Churchill?

It was all passed.

Huge win for WJ.

How is that a win for WJ??? im in this cluster. My 8th grader was accepted into Blair. My younger kid will not have such an opportunity. I was very against this.

Want your kid to go to Blair? Simple, move.

Did they all forget that she was the BOE President limiting questions and ramrodding through the resolutions last year while all of this was going down?

Everything substantive happened back then on her watch, including the addition of option H. MCPS would have to have done further analysis/engaged in additional consideration beyween March and Novvember (and the earlier the better) for any steering of this ocean liner. There was a timetable to keep that would have been incompatible, after the last set of options were released, with all but the most minor of adjustments.

Those minor adjustments would be such as we saw. I would bet some of that was foreseen/planned, like modifying H to send the immediate Crown area to Wootton @ Crown. The consultant's option construction was not allowed to present that in H, itself, because that would send populations across region boundaries based on existing HS zoning. The superintendent had no such constraint when it came to his own recommendation.

It's not as though this year's community input at BOE business meetings/work sessions/hearings had any significant effect.

See that mcps feb 5 boe presentation—that has all the details

So to review this BOE approved boundary changes that increase racial segregation and voted to eliminate the consortia that serve predominantly Black and Brown schools and they did so while calling the opponents of these changes racist? That is really....brave...yes that's the word s/

They mean for WJ property values. Sellers won't care about that, and buyers won't know what they missed.

MBLI was a fraud from the start and supporting it was racist.

Somehow i dont think montoya and julie are allies

Frenimies.

Remember that we live in a hegemonic county. The BOE seats are non-partisan in name only.

Still, there's always infighting, especially among those with greater aspirations. Look at how things have gone among Jawando, Friedson and Glass.
