What about this Friday?

If we're going to close due to "cold," MCPS should add the entire month of August to the MCPS calendar, and then people can hibernate for the entire month of January.

Not closing for cold. Closing because low temps will not melt the ice. It seems County lacks "resources" to clear out parking lots, bus loops, and in some places the walkways of schools. Now something saying clearing sidewalks suspended until Monday so sidewalks leading up to schools may not be cleared. The problem is there is no back up plan to try to teach virtually in mcps. Other counties in the region were able to pivot (to borrow a word from 2020) to asynchronous or synchronous online learning this week.

Were those counties also at the weekend that ended the semester? It was really poor timing for virtual learning due to schedule changes at the HS level. I do think that those schools that could have done virtual should have. And it should be the plan going forward for the remaining part of winter this year should need be.

If they're not back Monday everyone in office should be voted out. That is a total collapse of the bare minimum government services

This is also a once in a decade storm. Once in a lifetime pandemic. What's next oh?

And Monday will be over a week since the storm ended. That is a colossal failure if they can't get schools back open in a week.

You would have had a stroke in 2009.

That was back to back storms. This is one storm that they will have had over a week to clear. Christ people, if you can't handle the snow, move south!

It isn’t the soft snow that is the issue which was the case in 2009, just tons of it. This is ICE thick and heavy and packed into the snow so that it is timely and difficult and requires different tools and manpower to remove. Very unusual storm for this area.

I’m okay with that.

But then people won’t be able to take their extended European vacations.

Most of 1000 students at my school never experience a vacation or summer camp. Many do travel to their country of origin for Christmas and would be happy to spend six weeks there rather than two.

You gotta give Taylor time to produce his next single.

They definitely need to rethink their stance on virtual learning. I’m guessing the equity warriors in central office shut down any discussion of virtual learning because there will always be a few kids who can’t access it. But sometimes it’s important to go with the needs of the majority rather than a few

You want MCPS to close schools after snow until the snow melts? That's absurd.

Virtual learning was an utter failure. Kids learned nothing. Let the kids enjoy the snow instead of parking them in front of screens to play games while pretending to attend Zooms.

There are more than a few middle class kids with special needs that VL failed.

I don’t understand why it matters if HS students were at the start of new courses and semesters. You can still access your canvas course online and log onto zoom. You can meet the teacher virtually and go over course expectations and the syllabus. Can someone explain why starting new courses is such an insurmountable barrier on zoom? Also, most kids at least have 50% of the same schedule from the fall.

The vast majority can do make-up days. Most people can't afford your fancy vacations over summer and breaks.

Virtual is not an appropriate solution.

Some of these responses have been hilarious. Thank you for the entertainment peeps. While I find it absurd that we can’t get this shit cleaned up I get that they do bot have the resources and safety has to be the priority. I was peeturbed at first but gonna ride this out now nothing we can do..

Everyone just chill. I'm calling it now, no school til Monday.

If I would have known that this is a werk of no school, I would have taken PTO since last Friday to go somewhere warm with kids for vacation.

Gotta love the idiots on here going after people who have the audacity to take vacations during the summer!

Not only that, but also their blind refusal to acknowledge that no meaningful work happens on make-up days.
