What about this Friday?

This video sums it up. That said, the propensity for making the wrong decision increases the longer this goes on. If we woke up today and saw conditions, would we expect there to be school? So over time, it is not so much that risks decrease, especially with current capabilities and context, but rather that other risks and costs of not being in school overtake the risks caused by the current inability to clear ice.

Ha! Someone. Good one. Contact your STATE reps if you want the schools to OPEN.

One solution would be for each school to have a private contractor assigned to it with a competitive bid to clear the lots and sidewalks. I'm betting whatever the current bids are, they aren't competitive with the commercial landlords, etc. I get that this doesn't solve the neighborhood sidewalk problem or the fact that the county has plowed 6-foot high mounds of ice into travel lanes. But the fact that only 30% of schools are cleared at this point and the other 70% are still in progress is pretty bad. It would cost more money, but if shopping centers successfully employ contractors to clear their lots to the point that most of them were open for business by Wednesday morning, presumably the same could be done for MCPS properties. Many neighborhood HOAs have private plowing, so perhaps these contractors could also be employed to clear the school lots in these neighborhoods. Our apartment complex had all the sidewalks shoveled down to bare pavement and all the parking aisles cleared by Monday evening. It doesn't look pretty, but people can walk around safely and cars can go in and out. Again, private contractors.

But it would cost more money. Residents pay HOA fees for this stuff. Our apartment rent reflects the snow clearing services we get. The shopping center next to us has an excellent-looking parking lot right now, but I'm sure that's reflected in the rent the stores pay and also in the prices they charge shoppers. We have to decide what our priorities are.

Thanks for this information. But does this mean that the MCPS schools truly don’t have a plan of action for snow removal?

I would not want Taylor’s job right now. Very stressful

But we got videos!

And if I watch them over and over again maybe I will feel better about my child being at MCPS and being repeatedly cheated out of 180 days of education.

DCPS was online school yesterday and in person today.

Baltimore and Anne Arundel is online today and tomorrow. Also Alexandria VA

MCPS sends us stupid videos instead of planning properly.

Not going to happen. Taylor and the board shut down the virtual school claiming it was bad but refused to release the data. They have been clear they don’t support it.

+1 yes there can be endless explanations

But also the reality is that many businesses in this same area solved this same problem

And many school districts in states north of us closed much more briefly for this storm

The private contractors in my area just plowed the snow into the streets making them impassable.

Deduct the time they were “cheated” from the extra hours they’ve been in school.

Virtual instruction is not equitable in Montgomery County. You can’t send each kid home with a hot spot, plus not every student has an assigned chrome book.

But it CAN be done. It has been DONE before for an even longer period of time. If there was a will...
