What about this Friday?

It's the county that's done a poor job plowing streets, which is going to make it very difficult for buses to operate when school does resume. It's also apparently the county that hasn't plowed MCPS parking lots - the principal at my school sent out an email today thanking building service staff for their work on school sidewalks, but pointing out that the parking lots are untouched. If buses can't access the bus loop, how can they safely drop off kids? Where are teachers and staff supposed to park? At least in my neighborhood, some streets are down to just one lane - there is no room for on street parking, which will be needed if not all parking lot spaces are clear.

See next few posts. People are not feeling BFFy with this County.

What's the other choice if not to? There are still areas like high trafficked sidewalks that have yet to be plowed.

If we're going to close due to "cold," MCPS should add the entire month of August to the MCPS calendar, and then people can hibernate for the entire month of January.

Not closing for cold. Closing because low temps will not melt the ice. It seems County lacks "resources" to clear out parking lots, bus loops, and in some places the walkways of schools. Now something saying clearing sidewalks suspended until Monday so sidewalks leading up to schools may not be cleared. The problem is there is no back up plan to try to teach virtually in mcps. Other counties in the region were able to pivot (to borrow a word from 2020) to asynchronous or synchronous online learning this week.

McPS has….nothing.

DCPS schools were totally closed Wednesday. Some DC charter schools, which can make their own rules, did asynchronous learning. But at a lot of them, it was just logging on and marking your kid as “present.”

Clearing has been suspended. People are allowed to clear.

Enforcement of clearing has been suspended because people can’t chip through the ice fast enough and we’re facing fines.

That should read “clearing has not been been suspended

UPDATE: Sidewalk snow-clearing enforcement paused until Mon, Feb 2.
Due to sustained freezing temps, snow-packed sidewalks have become icy and unreasonably difficult to clear. In some cases, plowing also contributed to accumulation. Because of what we’re seeing and hearing from residents, Montgomery County has paused enforcement of sidewalk clearing requirements and won’t issue notices of violation until Monday, February 2. Although enforcement is paused, property owners should help their neighbors by clearing sidewalks as soon as it is safe and possible to do so, prioritizing entrances, exits, and accessible routes. Take interim safety measures like applying traction aids where necessary.
Our shared goal is the health and safety of all residents. Please check on older adults and others who may need help.

So they want elderly neighbors to help neighbors clear out ICeY pavement injuring themselves whereas the county supposedly have contracts with COMPANIES with EQUIPMENT. A BIG F FU to this CountyCouncil for failing to do their JOB. Vote each of them and their staff out. Where is the F leadership in this county?

No I think they want able bodied young neighbors to help the elderly! Once your own sidewalk is clear, if you still have strength and haven't broken your shovel, just walk down the block and help your neighbor.

But then people won’t be able to take their extended European vacations.

So 4pm for a decision? Any chance we’ll hear earlier? I’ve accepted that school tomorrow is highly unlikely, but I would rather not wait all day for confirmation.

I also think that it is unlikely to open tomorrow Friday. I drop off and pick up my kids which it does not concern me too much. I am aware that many sidewalks for walking to school kids ard not cleaned yet. At yesterday evening, I see workers were using metal shovels to clean the ice block sidewalk. I am surprised that they do not have any ride on machine to clean for frozen ice sidewalk.

If friday is not opened for school, what is the chances of allowing to open school gyms for basketball games or other activities this weekend?

I am still thinking a delay for tomorrow. Sadly!

The community recreation centers are open.

A delay won't change anything.
