What about this Friday?

The vast majority can do make-up days. Most people can't afford your fancy vacations over summer and breaks.

Virtual is not an appropriate solution.

Gotta love the idiots on here going after people who have the audacity to take vacations during the summer!

Don't schedule a vacation on school calendar make-up days that we all knew we'd have to use. It isn't complicated.

Not only that, but also their blind refusal to acknowledge that no meaningful work happens on make-up days.

The issue is whether enough work happens to prevent classes from needing to skip portions of their curriculum unless additional days are added. And for many classes, it wouldn't.

I don't have a problem with optional virtual days, but we still need to add instructional days.

A delay won't change anything.

I don't think there will be a delay. I think the county will close.

But a delay changes a lot. Buses are going to be late. There is no way that they will complete their runs on time when they will need to wait for kids to navigate over a lane of plowed snow between the sidewalk and the street, at each stop. High school buses will be a little late, and it will get compounded over time. A delay will reduce this a little because there will be less traffic on the road, plus it will be a little warmer for the kids who end up waiting a long time.

A delay also means that high school kids aren't waiting in the dark. It means that if elementary kids decide to cross the plowed in snow early and wait in the street, it's not rush hour and there will be more room for cars to navigate around them.

I used to teach special ed in DCPS (special ed is relevant due to buses), and the first time they announced multiple days of 2 hour delays, I wondered why. If the schools were safe to be open at 10 on Thursday, why wouldn't they still be safe at 8:00 on Friday. But when i saw the realities on my morning walk to school from the metro, and heard the kid's stories, I realized that those two hours do make a difference in kid safety.

Tell me, since you seem to want to control what I do with my time, how long should I wait to know if we're going to use June 22-25? You do know beach places book up early, right? Or is that a fancy vacation we're not allowed to have?

I think meaningful work can happen on the March and April days. But there's no way anything gets done in June other than checking off a box.

June 18 would work fine for most grades and subjects, too.

You don't know in advance for certain, although you know there's a good chance they will be. In particular, this year you knew the chance was very high, since we only have one built-in extra day.

So when you book your vacation, don't pick that week!

They are really extra.

I’m taking my vacation at the end of April. Booked a week long cruise. Have not told my students I will be gone for a week and don’t plan on it. They will find out when the sub shows up.

Oh and don’t pick the weeks they usually have for summer school. Oh wait, oops they changed those too this year. And don’t book the weeks for early sports and marching band practice. Oh and that leaves everyone vacationing one single week right before July 4. Are we allowed to travel that week, bossy?

We schedule our summer vacation as soon as the new mcps calendar gets approved each year. We schedule way in advance to get the best price-because we aren’t rich and we take one singular vacation a year.

It's fine. You will be fine and your kids will miss nothing, even if school goes to June 25. Which it won't. Everything will be wrapped up by June 16 at the latest and the "extra" half days that they will add will be watching movies and playing Kahoot. Even in high school. It really doesn't matter.

No school- some school parking lots still haven’t been plowed.

In Bethesda looking at an elementary school and they tried shoveling this morning. A whole crew of people (10?) and not a lot of progress seems to have been made. No way into the parking lot.
