Talk of potential government shutdown?

Dems won't filibuster a CR in the Senate. That doesn't mean they'll vote for one in the House without checks and balances on the Ketamine Man.

Senate Dems are asking for a guarantee that appropriated funds be spent instead of impounded, that staffing levels remain constant instead of the illegal firings and layoffs. Republicans are very insulted by the ask.

Dems won't sign off on allowing DOGE to continue.

I STG if any dem votes for this shit I will scream. If you're in a blue district call your rep and demand they let MAGA hang themselves.

Dems SHOULD NOT rescue the Republicans from themselves. The Dems need to be shouting from the rooftops that this is a mess of the Republicans' own making, that they have nobody else to blame, and it's high time they grow up, stop playing stupid games and start GOVERNING like responsible adults. And that goes for dealing with Trump, too. And that if they ever want Democrats' help, they need to seriously change course.

If they do we should stand outside of their homes with bullhorns for the next 4 years.

MAGA and I paid nearly 400k in taxes last year and will pay more this year. I don't feel like I get 400k worth of services from the government.

what services do you expect to be getting for those tax dollars at that income? do you understand the purpose of government? do you ever travel by plane? drive on an interstate highway? have a passport? enjoy relative peace and security? eat food you didn’t grow? put money in a bank? relatedly, did you struggle to share growing up? do you have some sort of deficiency where you are capable of feeling empathy or kindness towards others?

oh and I assume if you fall on your butt and stop earning close to a million dollars a year, I assume then you have no plans of using any government assistance

The GOP is laughable.

“The Republicans have been in good faith on negotiations on the funding issues all along, and the Democrats have had completely unreasonable conditions assigned to this," Johnson said. "They want us to limit the power of the executive branch. They want us to stipulate in the appropriations bills, for the first time in history, that certain agencies in the executive branch would have to have a specific number of employees — all sorts of just unreasonable, what I think are unconstitutional, demands. There'll be a violation of separation of powers. So we're pretty far apart right now, but it is not because the Republicans. It's because of the Democrats.“

On the positive side, the Democrats are demanding the right things and they have leverage.

What leverage? The GOP is voting in lockstep.

They got an outline of a bill through. One that would likely cause 25-30 centrists Rs to lose their seats over Medicare cuts. The Rs never vote in lockstep on anything substantive. Which is why Johnson has never passed a budget bill without relying on a MAJORITY of Dems to vote for it.

The GOP is herding cats. Massive is out. They have zero votes to lose and the Freedom caucus to placate with decimating Medicaid while promising their 25-30 centerists they won’t decimate Medicaid and lose the House.

And budget hawks being asked to vote for a bill that gives away 4T in tax cuts to oligarchs.

No, the GOP will not be voting in lockstep. It will be a sh*tshow, like… remember that time all business in Congress stopped because it took them 3 weeks to vote on a Speaker. It will be that. Except then they had 7-8 votes to spare. Here they can afford one defection. And one defection has already come forward.

So they are depending on the Freedom Caucus and the purple district moderate to both vote on a wildly unpopular bill that guts Medicaid and explodes the deficit they have made their primary message to give tax cuts to billionaires, but not eliminate taxes on tips, social security, etc.

And then there are the showboat wildcards like Bobert and MTG they cannot lose who will pull outrageous stunts that make everything worse.

And we have yet to discuss the Senate. Unless this goes through reconciliation, they need 60 votes.

But sure… lockstep.

Pops popcorn. Figures 3/14 is as good a time as any to polish off the resume, update linked in and start the process of extracting herself from Elon destroying her agency.

Also— Shut it all down. You are only essential if there is a clear threat of civilian death if you aren’t doing your job. Guard nukes. Minimally staff the ICU at VA hospitals o people whose medical care is life threatening. And that’s it. No social security checks. No Medicare o Medicaid reimbursements. No emergency passports. No HUD loans closing. No public park building or memorial open to the public in any capacity unless you are visiting you spouse who is in the VA ICU. No ICE. No CBP. No TSA. No FAA.

Elon wants to lime ate government? We’ve had too many “shutdowns” that kept things American people would miss running. Shut it all down. Then people can decide if Elons plan is a solid one.

Everything, everything written here. I hope the government shuts down for six months. I hope MAGA gets everything it voted for. This is not my lesson to learn!

Agree with this. The essential Feds need to walk out to get people to pay attention.

what services do you expect to be getting for those tax dollars at that income? do you understand the purpose of government? do you ever travel by plane? drive on an interstate highway? have a passport? enjoy relative peace and security? eat food you didn’t grow? put money in a bank? relatedly, did you struggle to share growing up? do you have some sort of deficiency where you are capable of feeling empathy or kindness towards others?

what services do you expect to be getting for those tax dollars at that income?
- common defense and security services

do you understand the purpose of government?
- yes, although I also understand that the purpose of government is the subject of great controversy and is more about subjective preferences than objective truth

do you ever travel by plane?
-yes

drive on an interstate highway?
-yes

have a passport? enjoy relative peace and security? eat food you didn’t grow? put money in a bank?

relatedly, did you struggle to share growing up? do you have some sort of deficiency where you are capable of feeling empathy or kindness towards others?
-no, I feel empathy towards others and have no problem sharing. I just dont believe that we've optimized government yet. I'm also tired of the concept that thr rich pay no taxes when literally only the rich pay taxes. "Eat the rich" etc, does that sound empathetic?

You don't think all of the things you listed are worth 400k a year? I pay more than that and I'm happy to in order to keep planes in the sky. YMMV.

When people say they want the rich to pay more taxes they don't mean you ding dong, they mean Jeff Bezos. He mad at him.

No essential workers working without pay either. Shut it all down.

Why are you punishing actual working Feds. No pay for congress, senate or Doge.

You misunderstand second PP, who says essential workers are working but aren’t paid. They shouldn’t be working, so people actually experience much faster what happens without essential workers.

Elon has already started this part of the destruction so a complete government shutdown won’t make it worse. Remember there are already people walking around who were in the middle of medical research trials that have been suspended and many programs on which Americans depend shut down.

WRONG: Just read Heather Cox Richardson today. If Dems play and let Rs shut down government, it gives him authority to fire everyone except essential employees, of which there are few. We’d lose even more with a government shutdown. I hope the Dems wake up.

Incorrect. That is not the law.

Trump may try to fire every federal employee who is not deemed "essential" (essential = picks up the mail and makes sure the water pipes haven't burst) during a shutdown. You think the FAA sickout was bad enough?

The lawsuits will be quick. The public disaster will be even quicker.
