How many cleanings can you do in an hour? It's not 1 cleaning per hour is it? I know my hygienist doesn't spend an hour on my teeth. |
I’m not the PP but I clicked on the article and read most of it. I don’t see what bearing it has really on the question of doctors firing patients from their practice. It discusses things that most doctors and NPs are well aware of and have nuanced opinions of. It’s not anything new or groundbreaking to someone working in the field already. |
New poster, but let’s say the hygienist does 3 patients an hour. He or she then takes home more than half of that. The receptionist still has to get paid, along with the building rent, the equipment, and oh yeah the actual dentist. |
Ok, now how much do you charge for fillings, crowns, root canals, extractions, X-rays, fluoride treatments, cosmetic dentistry, Invisalign, etc? Or does your office only do cleanings all day long? |
It's not about reason, facts, or logic. It's about emotion. Many people -- rightfully so! -- are angry, and scared, and feel betrayed by a system they feel should be there to take care of them in crisis. This is compounded -- rightfully so -- by watching the growing disparity between what they have and what is provided to people with more wealth through concierge medicine. The gap widens. Unfairness is the salt rubbed deep in that wound. I'm a doctor. I HATE this. I'm a patient as well, with multiple critical surgeries behind me. I did an additional degree in philosophy (medical ethics) and went to work in Canada for several years to understand how that system works from the inside. I don't know how to fix this. I've tried -- the best I could do is find a salaried position where I can give the best care I can and be supported when needed for my own medical issues. It's an f'n mess, guys. The only ones cheering for this are the insurance companies with their record profits, and their shareholders. |
The entire appt is one hour long and the hygienist refuse less time, if you give less time they demand their own assistant and they call it assisted hygiene. Honestly if you see an in network dentist with delta or care first insurance, its a loss for the practice and you are literally being seen with the hopes of finding something to do on you like a filling etc. We are out of network and I have been at this game for a long time and there's no way a cleaning appointment is profitable by even $1 if insurance involved, anyone that tells you different I would love to get an explanation. |
You forgot supplies!!! Everything is 3x more expensive today but STOP!!! YOURE NOT ALLOWED TO CHARGE EXTRA TO ADJUST FOR INFLATION!!! SO SUCK IT UP!!! SMH AT THIS THREAD AND WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING ABOUT THEIR DOCS, ONLY IF THEY KNEW THE TRUTH!!! |
| Our practice no longer performs any rapid viral testing (flu, covid, rsv, mono) because the cost of the in house testing is exorbitant and insurances do not reimburse for them. You’d think we could make money hand over fist during flu season but it’s the opposite when the expectation is for rapid viral testing. Which is a real shame. |
You think NYC and Boston don’t have affluent educated people who did their homework and know what time it is? There’s something about the DCA, combo of education in one area coupled with ignorance (but hostility and arrogance) in another (ie science) that is a special toxic brew around here. |
its a shame and the public takes out on you... all while cigna ceo for example: David Cordani’s $20.9 million in total pay last year was an increase from his $19.9 million in overall earnings in 2021. He received $1.5 million in base salary and $3.6 million in non-equity incentives. He also made around $12.6 million and $2.9 million in stock and option awards, respectively. Cordani earns 277 times more than Cigna’s average employee. |

Delta CEO of CA (14.4 million) makes more than apple CEO. Anthem (13.6 million (care first) also makes more than apple CEO (8.7 million) and these stats are from 2016.

Look, my dentist has a special office dedicated to financing discussions. Cleanings are a loss leader to get you in the door to find a bunch of other problems that are profitable to fix. |
It the same thing for wellness visits with PCPs. Fortunately for dentists, they preform high value procedures. Unfortunately for PCPs, high value procedures are usually performed by specialists. As a patient, I prefer concierge. I know what I'm paying for and my doctor actually spends time addressing concerns. My only regular medication is a statin. Before concierge, it was this is the drug. Now, there is actually a discussion about the plusses and the minuses of different statins, not just a prescription for the generic that the HMO requires as an initial prescription |
If you've got the time to all-caps scream here, write a blog. You're probably right; people who aren't MDs don't understand the behind the scenes goings on of the medical community. So tell that story, and tell your MD friends to do the same. Screaming at anons on this board doesn't do anything but make doctors look less credible, overly emotional, and bad at managing their own business. |
I’m not arguing with you. I agree with you that the issue is all profit driven. |
