I'm wondering if the people saying no haven't traveled internationally with their kids before. It's really not that big of a deal. My twins are 8, for what it's worth, so I'm not out of touch with the age at issue here.
+1 my DD has traveled internationally with just my parents on some amazing trips between the ages of 8 and 11. Just a few years later they are both unable to travel due to dementia and degenerative disease. I’m so glad she had the experiences with them that she did.
