Very disturbing incident on metro bus

The bus driver bears a lot of responsibility in this. But the problem is that the politicians don't back the drivers (or the police) so the boots-on-the-ground drivers don't want to stick their necks out.

It will be interesting to see what the emergency protocol is for violence on a bus. But the driver did the right thing by not intervening. Not in the most heavily armed nation in the world. She or he deserves to go home to their family too.

And that is the attitude that lets the uncivilized brutalize everybody else, particularly in low income communities.

Come on, it’s a bus driver, not a police officer or security guard. The driver should have at least let the victim off the bus if she wanted it.

As a human the bus driver could have called 911 for aid to assist the woman after she was tossed off of the bus. She was also yelling out
to the bus driver for at least 7 minutes or so to stop the bus, i.e. she clearly was in distress.

Blah blah blah. She was “moral.” She was “religious.” She “cared about them and offered them a gift.”

She was a controlling busybody who should have minded her own business and stop trying to police others’ behavior in public. The end.

She did not feel cursing was appropriate in public particularly around younger bus riders.

There was a day, not too long ago, in which teens would have been severely reprimanded for cursing in public.

We used to have decorum in society. Instead some cities are turning into gutter trash.

How do you know that the bus driver didn’t call 911? And where did you get 7 minutes. Also how do you know the bus driver knew. If the bus was loud and crowded, given that drivers are in plexiglass compartments, it’s entirely possible that the driver didnt know so I’m wondering how you reached your conclusions.

I would also never tell anyone to stop cursing in public (because who cares?), but the fact that she did doesn't come anywhere near justifying their reaction.

Arrests? I would presume the kids ride the bus daily and a simply stake out would catch them.

No, it’s not okay to use crass language in public.

No, it’s not okay to beat up a lady and drag her off a bus.

What happens to these boys when they are out of high school? How do they work a job without cursing and assaults?

They do not plan to work regular ‘jobs’. Either public assistance or crime. Both are seen as acceptable ways to make a living.

I think we're jumping to conclusions that the immediate evidence before us don't really allow us to reach. How do you know what these people want or intend to do later? They did something terrible here, no doubt, but you don't know anything else about them besides what you saw on the video.

You’re right. There could absolutely be some future Rhodes scholars on tape there.

Possibly, though I think it's significantly more likely that some of them ... do wind up with a job one day. Which the PP I was replying to seemed to think was impossible, they'll only be either on public assistance or criminals.

NPR should do a magazine segment on that video in five years. A "Where are they now?" half hour show. There was some totally pointless endless "This girl was super motivated in high school, but then she didn't go to The college so I tracked her down. I sent her first this email then this one, then I bumped into her boyfriend in the staircase. I just really wanted to know what she did with her life."
It sounds like we really want to know what happens to kids who get in packs to terrorize and brutalize adults and seniors on the bus.

That is NO ONE’S PROBLEM BUT HERS. She is the boss of no one whatsoever but herself.

Seriously, are you dim?

Of course it doesn’t, but the same person (saying the idiotic things like moral, religious, giving them a gift) defending her trying to demand other people behave the way she approves of is absurd.

Would the driver continue driving after calling 911?
It's pretty obvious he knew what was going on but didn't want to get hurt. Eh.

We need an audit of the communication system on-board buses and the emergency communication systems on-board busses. I suspect few if any actually work.

These criminals beat her and tossed her off the bus. You may not like a busybody, but is that the response.

The kids belong in jail. Nothing will happen to them and crime will get worse and worse.

You need to assume everyone is carrying a gun. And act accordingly. Because that's what you have. Especially since ghost guns hit the street in such large numbers.

That's why you should pack heat if you are trained and live around a bunch of trash.

Terrible take.

You are saying it's fine for teens to scream obscenities on the bus, and basically make it an awful experience for other riders.

So an older person, like this woman, who is clearly religious and moral, should just endure this b/c she is too poor to Uber or drive, while wealthier people stop riding public transit so they don't have to engage with kids like this at all.

I can guarantee this behavior would not be tolerated in UMC white spaces. But it's OK in poorer, majority AA spaces? Poorer people have to have a lower quality of life out of fear of violence and harm? That's very messed up.

Oh, puh-lease. How asinine.

Yes. Keep your mouth shut. Swearing is not illegal. You are not entitled to seats together. Don’t like it? Walking is free.

Thanks for showing us what kind of person you are. I am not opposed to cursing but there is a time and place. And in front of little kids isn't it. Curse when you get off the bus.

Neat opinion you’ve got there. Feel free not to swear. Other people will. If you ride public buses, you may hear it. Deal with it.

Hmmm your opinion isn't so neat. These kids are so fragile that a mere suggestion makes them want to beat the person up? You don't like communicating with others? You deal with it.

I was on Metro this afternoon and a group of 4 teens (and maybe even preteens, they looked quite young) was being loud and obnoxious. Fine, NBD. They were cursing. Fine, NBD. Then they started goofing around pushing each other. NBD until they started pushing each other into other passengers. One of them crashed into a lady’s head. She cried out, either in pain/fear/surprise or any combination of those. One teen then told the “crasher” that he should punch the lady in her face. She went on to say, “Didn’t she hear about the lady on the W4?”. God help us all. Just about everyone, including me, got off at the next stop. I have NEVER felt a need to do that before in my life.

Glad nothing happened to you and you stayed safe.

Of course, had something bad happened, plenty of posters on this board would say it was all your fault for getting on the bus in the first place.
