Either Sam Levine (was an AP at B-CC and a Principal Intern at Kennedy this past year) or Vilma Najera (longtime AP at Springbrook who then became a Principal Intern as well at Quince Orchard HS this past year). Perhaps Joey Jones because Frost students matriculate to Wootton - this is the most likely as he's fantastic and has been tagged for higher things in the district for a long time. Has to be one of these three.

Don't you think Wootton's own principal intern this past year, Rohner, would be on the list? Springbrook has a principal opening as well, so Najera may be up for that.

Good question. Springbrook's principal is on leave, he's returning. Rohner has most of his experience in middle schools and would be a good choice, but in these situations they try to either get the principal from the middle school in the community (Renay Johnson from TPMS -> Blair, Mildred Charley-Greene from TPMS -> Northwood, Alicia Deeny from TPMS -> RM, John Taylor from CJMS -> Churchill) or a principal who's worked with similar communities in the past (Levine). That's why Dr. Jones is very much the clear front-runner. He has worked with high schools in the past but just moved down to the MS level. He's had his fair share of entreaties for HS and is just waiting for the right move. If they want Rohner in there, it has to be as an interim because I feel as though he needs more seasoning.

Then why was the Springbrook principal position listed on MCPS Careers earlier this month?

I never got the impression that Dr. Joey Jones wanted high school. I think he’s pretty happy with middle and having fewer evening/athletic commitments, but that could have changed. Vilma Najera seems to have a positive energy. Kudos to Beth Thomas for choosing and cultivating great APs and principal interns. I also wonder if there are any central people whose jobs have been reorganized and who now need new positions. Often they get first dibs on HS openings, in part because they were promoted to central in the first place because they were strong principals (with some exceptions, of course).

I am wondering about that too. I don't understand exactly what the new org chart means for the existing directors or associate superintendents. One associate superintendent (Dyson) has left for Frederick County. But they recently named two current directors (Moran and Floyd-Cooper) to two of the three associate superintendent of school support and well-being positions, and Monteleone was named associate superintendent of well-being, learning and achievement. So where does that leave Koutsos and Morris? They also appointed one new director, from outside of MCPS.

Koutsos is retiring and Jimmy D’Andrea left for Brian Scriven’s district in Pennsylvania. Not sure about Morris. I suspect more will leave with Dyson, so they may not have additional folks to place. I wonder if they initially thought D’Andrea would go to Wootton. The job he had, I know, wasn’t the right fit for him, but he was a good principal. Glad he will be doing that again in Pa. I know of a couple middle school principals who would love that promotion to HS, but they’ve been passed over before and likely would be passed over again in favor of one of the more dynamic, up and comers like Najera.

Wow. I know it's a tough school in terms of poverty levels, ESOL, etc. but they just hired their new leader at the beginning of the school year.

Dr. Moran did nothing to improve problems in the Churchill cluster. He showed up for the media during the Churchill N Word card meeting but did nothing to follow through with promises. He has rode the family coat tails now to even a higher administrative position while he did not support a principal to reach tenure. He doesn’t deserve the promotion and MCPS will suffer for it.

What are his family connections? Also, why do you blame him for Brandice Heckert not making it to tenure? Curious.

The AP there has taken over for most of the year, I believe, so it's being posted just to meet the 1 week SOP.

Family members have been MCPS administrators for multiple generations. Mrs. Heckert was not successful under Dr. Moran’s leadership and supervision. They both came into their positions at the same time. She was sent back to be an AP and he was promoted even after the most recent scandal of a Special Needs student being targeted for bullying including the false social media posting intended to getting him in trouble.

Dr. Moran only had a few years experience as principal before being promoted as Director. Now he has the Associate Superintendent position after only four years as Director. Meanwhile, Churchill will have 3 Directors and 3 principals in about 6 years. Many problems have festered and non of the past leadership had any type of plan, let alone a long term plan, for improving the school.

He was a principal for 7 years, after having been an AP for 4 years. I'm not sure how many more years of experience would be preferred to be a director.

And did an ingenious job at Glenallan, many of those programs are a model for the county. Great personality too — gregarious yet hard-working. Not a huge fan of directors because they often lose touch of the classroom/school environment and are the type of people who saw teaching/leading solely as a stepping stone to higher positions, but he’s good in my book. Maybe having education run in his family is a contributing factor to that.

Yes, but that letter is from April. Then, in June, they listed the position as open.

Dr. Williams is now in a new role in Central Office. Springbrook's new principal appointed on June 28th, could be Valentine (current acting) or Najera

Curious.

Maybe he was better at being an elementary principal after his experience as an elementary teacher. Perhaps he would have been an ok Director for elementary schools because that is where he had his previous experience. However, under Dr. Smith’s reorganization, Directors were assigned several clusters. Dr. Moran is a nice guy but he would talk a good talk and not follow through with action. He had no concept of problems in middle and high schools. There’s a huge difference between elementary students and curriculum vs. middle and high school. Dr. Moran also has only had four years of experience as Director. It’s a surprised that MCPS didn’t tap someone more experienced for an Associate Superintendent position.
