Leagues, I don't know and don't care, but do kids play basketball outside when they can in December and January - um, hell yes they do if they have nowhere else to play. You either come from the northeast or you don't know much about basketball. And then leagues -- well, perhaps something has changed that might get people to consider alternatives when there are none -- hmmmmmm, what might that be? |
| For those that cant figure out how futsal is played outdoors let me help. Alexandria Soccer worked with Alexandria city to repurpose some of those old unused tennis courts. Cleaned them up, lined them out, installed fixed futsal goals there you have it. Outdoor futsal courts. |
| So it’s outdoor futsal or no futsal....but the cold! |
I have upper ES and MS boys. Almost every parent I know would sign their boys up for an outdoor winter basketball league. |
It’s much easier to play futsal on the cold compared to basketball due to hands being too cold. But I’ve seen many outdoor basketball games during the winter. When playing indoors, leagues typically use the same sidelines and touch lines for futsal that is in place for basketball. Hence, it would be easy to set up outdoor futsal during the winter months. Only dilemma is the small area for spectators/parents to watch their kids play. |
True, but there's a difference between cold and bitter cold (wind) or unsafe (precip on the playing surface). There are quite a few cold, but playable, days in Jan./Feb. especially if the games are timed during the warmest part of the day (12-4 pm) and not just weekends, but possibly weekdays too after virtual school lets out. |
| the problem is practice- by the time kids are out of school, day light is on its way out. our club does winter scrimmages on turf in November and early December; it's already bitterly cold under the lights, the kids love it, but drop the temperature another 20 degrees and they probably wouldn't |
That is awesome. But why not just play soccer on fields then? Seems like any moisture at all and the courts would become more dangerous than any field. |
More profitable to play futsal. |
Agreed, games may have to be prioritized at the expense of practice or vice versa. Perhaps more practice sessions during the weekend? Using turf fields would open up a lot of practice space, especially the "fast" turf fields that are hard-packed (in between hard court and artificial grass). |
Yup. Much cheaper to rent outdoor basketball courts during the winter months particularity at public parks/schools. Heck, they can even use/rent out tennis courts as long as they use tennis/sneaker type shoes. Colleges, ie U. of Maryland, have abundant tennis courts. |
I actually know some clubs will get permits for fields and courts for the entire year. They than resell those facilities to other groups trying to get court/ field time. Pretty good gig, the club pays the reduced rate to the county or city, and turns around and makes a premium by selling to other groups who can’t get court/field time because the clubs have monopolized the permits. |
I don't think there would be any cost difference, and my kid plays both. Why would clubs profit more from futsal? Fewer kids play. |
| Futsal outside in the winter cold. Dumb. |
But that weighted ball is so much fun to kick in the cold... |
