I wonder if the city bothered to talk to the community about the courts or if they just unilaterally decided they should let private interests dictate how public resources are used. Maybe green space, dog parks, fitness courses, basketball courts, or playground space would have been a better idea. I’m sure rigorous studies were used to determine a thoughtful course of action and there’s a lot of data supporting how local community kids benefitted. Incidentally if the club is using them, the courts are generating revenue for the club. So the fact still remains that the city (whether they were aware or not) converted public resources and used public monies for the benefit of a private individual. Again, wouldn’t it be nice if there were some honesty in the area clubs. |
The courts are free use. The club does not use them for leagues. I am sure the city evaluated a variety of alternative uses. You may have noticed that there is already an extraordinary amount of park space, dog parks and basketball courts in Alexandria, and that the incremental real estate involved in these projects was minor. You may have also noticed that many would like to see more of these courts outside Alexandria, and that their absence in those places is viewed as a failure. You truly have some mental or psychological issues with this person and club. You really need help, all kidding aside. |

Thankfully to the previous poster. Someone with some sense that has weighed in on this topic.
If repurposing overgrown weed ridden unused tennis courts into functional Futsal courts and cleaned up tennis courts is not an ideal solution that everyone in the local community benefits from then please step up and run for office in Alexandria City to put forth your brilliant ideas. A lot of complaining from folks that know nothing yet can only find fault in everything. As for our friend that played college soccer and has played for 40 years but opted not to go pro because the money wasnt good enough. I thank you for the laugh to start my day. |
Our society is dishonest. Our government at every level appears to be an organized criminal syndicate. Every company has a marketing/PR department whose job is to tell lies. We have entire companies (advertising/PR) who are set up to help other companies tell lies if they're not smart and dishonest enough to invent and tell their own lies. We have a huge propaganda machine known as the media to "shape the narrative" (tell lies) on behalf of our lying politicians. We have huge intelligence agencies, a large part of whose job it is to manage the media machine to tell lies that they select for us. In this environment, why would you expect a football club to be honest? |
So now you’re in favor of free play? Looks like I convinced you despite your disbelief. Also, I said I didn’t go pro because I would have been a very bottom rung semi pro as I was an avg. college player. Trust me, those leagues exist (outside this country) but wasn’t worth it. But, we know, you’re always right and your omniscient. Must be nice. |
All they favor is whatever benefits them. If there is a different opinion the other person must be clearly wrong, a complainer, mentally unstable, or stupid. These Alexandria people sound like fun parents and staff to hang out with on the sidelines. |
It's cold AF during futsal season, and indoor Ys are generally taken up with basketball and other stuff. Where do you recommend that kids do this "free play futsal" you are advocating for? And are you volunteering to organize kids who want to play there all at the same time? If so, great. Let us know what court and when. |
The ones on the west side near Ramsay get TONS of use by the community. But, I am betting you don't get over there much. |
Sounds like it will happen. I get emails from places advertising Futsal Leagues and to sign up early etc. I thought to myself if its a good idea to play. I wonder if playing in larger indoor spaces (like the St James) is safer than lets say an elementary school gym. I guess either way the kids are making contact indoors and parents will cram into those spaces to watch. Thoughts? |
I think they should do it without spectators. For kids 8 and up, there is really no need for a parent or multiple parents to be there watching. Littler kids may need one parent. |

Is Puma Elite still around?
We looked at futsal last year and found a mix between futsal specific clubs and soccer clubs that offer futsal. Any thoughts on which club offers the best training without paying an arm and leg. I am just looking to utilize the winter months to get DDs some strong footskill work. U16 and u15. |
It ain't that cold (anymore, that's to climate change - joke). Heck, half the elite teams around here practice outdoor in Feb. Also, knew a guy that set up a pick up league at the local YMCA. It worked nicely. Lots of latino kids came to play as they could afford it. But, yes do what you need to do to help your kid. I'd honestly like to see a setup as follows if it has to be somewhat organized: three sessions a week. 2 practices with coaching focused on individual foot skills mostly (vs. team concepts and trying to "win" a game) and then supervised (coaches) pick up games rotating players in and out. No set teams week to week, just times for the right amount of players to show up to get their hour or two of play in. Creativity and confidence emphasized vs. the coach getting a win or these pay to play tournaments, for a meaningless trophy, etc. |
Our Club resumes 3-night per week for (every team in the Club) practices mid-January every winter. My kids have been out there in 28 Degrees, dark, at 9pm at night. It doesn't bother them. In fact, they get hot if they have too many under armour gear/layers on. |
What club, if you don't mind me asking? |
| ^ Barca. They have internal outdoor scrimmages every weekend after season ends until Xmas break and start them up again on Saturdays when practices resume mid-January until the leagues start again. |
