Where do average students go to school?

Why just state schools? Plenty of private schools are easier to get to not than public schools.

But private schools are crazy expensive.

I graduated a 78 average. So under 3.0 had no problem getting into college. My college GPA was under 3.0 and no problem getting into grad school.

I rarely discussed HS GPA in college as folks got pissed. Also got 990 SAT as my counselor said a perfect score. Perfect as my school accepted a certain amount under 1,000 and 990 was a touchdown!!

Don't worry. I almost went to law school too - scholarship -

If you pay full freight. I guarantee you can find privates, like SLACs, that will give your average DMV student merit aid to discount tuition. Will Davidson or Grinnell (2 of the top USNWR that offer merit)? Probably not. But look below the top 50-60 SLACs or at colleges USNWR list as “regional”. They are actually competing for kids in market where college age population is shrinking.

3.2 from what type of school.

Mcps

OP is frustrating. No one can tell you anything meaningful with no information about your kid. So he is MCPS kid w/ 3.2 GPA. Is it wt or uwt? Has he taken SAT/ACT?

3.2 unweighted

Mcps

White UMC rising sophomore

In short: too soon to really tell since he hasn't taken SAT or ACT.

No APs yet (and perhaps never).

Again: where do *average* kids end up? Which state schools? Which privates (ideally ones that don't break the bank)?

WVU, ECU, Towson, George Mason etc. All will give a good education if the kid wants to get one.

Even normal UMC money opens doors to decent colleges: Full pay + dad or grandpa makes a phone call to a prominent alum they know. Easy as hell.

I see a lot of rich dumbbells getting into Michigan, Wisconsin, Miami FL, Tulane -- I think those are all top 50 US News.

Oh come on. They can get into LACs or Unix ranked outside the top 50

Not going to say it's not possible. OP didn't provide much info other than 3.2 GPA - is it weighted, unweighted, test scores, number of AP, URMs, first gen... I mean there are so many variables. For totally unhooked kids, i standby my previous post.

Agree w/ pp other metrics and intangibles matter but DD#1 graduated from a top private this spring. The non honors, full pay kids were attending all sorts of schools in the US News 50-100. Examples: SMU, PItt, UC Boulder, and Drexel. Among LACs: Furman, and Hobart WS. Also attending "regional" colleges like: Elon, Fairfield and Loyola (MD).

Can you tell us where you went to grad school? I was under the impression that grad schools won't accept less than a 3.0 and I'm worried for my kids.

too early to tell but if his trend continues...

UMCP is out
UMBC is most likely out
SMCM is most likely in
Towson, in
Salisbury, in
Frostburg, in

Privates will cost you even with 10-15k "token" merit aid.

OP, I’ve been looking at same and you’ve gotten good advice. Also add St. Joseph’s U in Philly and Drew in NJ.

That sounds like a good list for OP to look at. With your child's stats, I'm surprised they were denied at Clemson and Tulane.

More importantly, WHEN? And almost as importantly, where did you go to high school? College? If you graduated college in the 1980s, that experience has ZERO relation to today. If you attended some rural high school in central South Dakota that offers zero advanced courses, that's completely different that any DMV area school.

Towson, George Mason, Radford, and the like.
