How many steps a day do you walk?

Average 12500 or so.

I have to make an effort to get over 2500 . . .

Same. I work from home and am not a runner (is that how people get so many steps?)

I haven’t been wearing my Fitbit since I got my new job, but it is definitely over 10k.

I have a dog that I walk roughly for an hour and half to two hours each day. I live in the city so I also walk to the bus/metro. I am terrible at bringing lunch, so I also walk to get lunch most days. I also go to the gym 3 to 4/5 days a week. On the weekends, unless I am crunched for time or terrible weather - I try to walk most places within a two mile walk.

+1 and I live in the city as well. Walk to work, walk to lunch, walk to gym, walk home, walk to groceries, walk to dry cleaners. You get the point. I usually average around 18k a day.

My job is pretty sedentary, with a longish driving commute. On days I go into the office, I struggle to hit 10,000 steps without going for a run. On my telecommute days and on weekends, I can easily hit 12,000 without a run.

Yup. I walk the dog a 5k every day. That is 7500 steps for me but still struggle to get to 10 thousand

My goal is 15,000. Most days, 20k (this includes steps incurred during working out).

I am calling complete bullshit to anybody who averages 40,000 steps a day as the PP said above.

I go for long walks a couple of times a week and on those days, I end up around 24,000 steps.

Unless you are running 10 miles a day (which gets me around 22,000 steps) and then walking another 15,000 steps you aren't getting 40K.

Minimum of 10k and usually more like 12-14, higher when possible. I'll tell you the truth, though - it takes a LOT of time.

I work from home so don't get those walking to Metro steps in or anything like that. I probably spend at least two hours a day walking (walking my dog, and taking myself for walks) - more when I am able.

I love to walk and consider it to be my meditation time in addition to how I get exercise. It is super time consuming, though - and, like, if there's a day that I can't get enough walking in I get crabby about it.

I walk at least 12k every single day. People are SO impressed by that. Honestly, and unfortunately it seems to have very little impact on my weight. Just like people say. I know that I am much better for doing it, long term mobility wise, but boy do I wish t would help me lose weight.

5,000= basic daily activity
10,000= to maintain weight
15,000+= to lose weight

15-20k- No car so I walk everywhere and my jobs are dog walking and teaching fitness classes.

I aim for 15-20k a day, but I have (and recommend) a treadmill desk. I might was well be walking 1 mph while filing boring paperwork for 8 hours a day. When I'm not at work, I seldom break 5k.

As for the fitbit community, I've heard that some folks set their fitbit to be very sensitive in order to ramp up the numbers and that some earlier versions of the fitbit just overcount (e.g., if you swing your arms too far while walking, it will count one step as two or three).

Former NYer and there it was easy to hit 10,000 steps per day, and my goal was 12-15,000. Since moving to the DC suburbs...it is hard to get to 10,000. I average in my day to day 6-7,000. And yes, I’ve gained about 8lbs in the last two years I’ve lived here. I’m trying to make a more concerted effort, but I hate that I have to work to get to 10,000. Would love to hear anyone’s tips or tricks for getting over the hump and to the next level with increasing steps. Right now, I can only get to 7-8,000 if I take an hour long walk during the day separate from the rest of my daily tasks and errands.
