Everything DC manages is a disaster

Not every U.S. City is the capitol of the USA.

The pathetic condition of DC over the past 4 decades is a national (and international) disgrace.

Remember the millions stolen from Metro parking lots?

An incompetent tax office that steals money out of bank accounts instead of issuing owed refunds;

An "emergency parking" system that is basically never enforced;

No traffic police while we have increasingly dangerous roads and hordes of people riding illegal motorcycles everywhere;

Litter and trash everywhere and apparently no solution;

A huge rat problem (reported in numerous sourced this week);

A zoning board that can't be bothered to prevent eyesores or dangerous non-permitted flips;

A 911 system that is so bad multiple people have died because emergency responders went to the wrong address or didn't show up at all;

A seeming inability to do anything about spiking crime rates.

What do our tax dollars do, again?

Well let's debunk your first one. DC does not manage the transit system. Have you not heard of "The Compact". Also, after reading hysterical posts like yours over the years on DCUM, I was surprised to learn from a recent Washington Post article that WMATA is not the worst manages, dangerous, and dysfunctional transit system in the US. Apparently, NY, NJ, Chicago, Miami, and Boston is worst in regards derailments, fires, budgeting etc. metro is ranked in the middle of the pact

Nobody wants to pay for anything yet everyone expects that infrastructure built 50, 60 years ago should be in perfect condition. Unions prevent accountability and local governments are more occupied with blaming rather than addressing problems.

It's time to move to Canada (they only have a meth problem so it's not so bad)!!

Yeah, let's give Metro more money, then it will work!! Why does everyone forget than before SafeTrack, Metro was given $4 BILLION and managed to do basically nothing with it. Why do people forget that last year Metro failed to use all of the maintenance funds allocated to it? Why do people forget that nearly every other major city in the country with a subway system runs better, more often, and at lower cost than Metro (good WaPo article about that this week)?

The problem with Metro isn't money, it's incompetent, horrible employees.

And yet the city as had budget surpluses for the last ten years, and a real estate boom. So pathetic.

Since when was the District of Columbia sole manager of Metro and Dulles Airport? Really?

If you fly in and out of Dulles, you should be smart enough to know that Virginia is not DC. Dulles is in the commonwealth of Virginia. As is Washington National DCA airport.

Are you kidding me, OP? You must not be a long timer. It is paradise living in the city compared to the 1990s. Trash is picked up, snow is removed, libraries are actually open, and there are no squashed rats on my street. That's progress.

Trash and filth cover most of DC. You probably live in North Cleveland Park with Popville. Try going east of the park someday.

Let's not be willfully stupid. I am well aware that VA and MD have a role in Metro. I am also aware that DC wields disproportionate control over managing Metro and hiring the useless incompetents that work for Metro. Let's not pretend otherwise and embarrass ourselves.

I lived east of the park when I first lived here. I work in Columbia Heights. It was ten times worse when I moved here in 1994. Trust me, you ain't seen nothin'.

Re: 911 and emergency services

Taxes in MoCo are higher and this is covered much better there. A friend decided to buy in DC bc taxes were lower than MoCo and aw no reason to pay more. THIS is one reason. You get what you pay for.

Ok, so DC was worse more than 20 years ago, but is still disgusting today. You have lived in DC during this time. You win ...?

I'll settle for enforcing stop work orders on dangerous housing. It would be nice if DC wasn't being filled with hideous popups and beige brick monstrosities, but you're right -- DC government would probably come up with something even worse. Just look at the Reeves Center.

What I'm saying is it's not disgusting. You haven't seen disgusting. This city has made a ton of progress. We were junk bond rated at one time; now we have a budget surplus. Mayor Anthony Williams did an awesome job of pulling DC out of the abyss. I didn't vote for Bowser and won't in future, but this place is a much, much better place than it was before.
