Bob haircuts are ugly!

Guess I don't understand some of the negative reactions to a bobbed haircut. Is it the fact that it usually has fewer layers than other styles? Or that it is often chin-to-shoulder length?

Personally, it seems like most women are in need of better haircuts--more natural-looking and flattering to their features, and not more complicated in styling. Hair that is too long and not in the best health/appearance is not attractive for women or men.

Different strokes for different folks. Personally, I think long hair on anyone over 30 looks childish or dowdy.

Mine is all shoulder length with bangs and looks a lot more put together than the long hair I was sporting prior. Think Reese Witherspoon's latest cut.

The stacked bob, though, I hate. But the but people I are around town with that cut are clearly tourists.

Agreed, it's a big range.

Frankly, I'd love to have longer hair. But my hair is very thin (fine, slightly wavy but I smooth it straight); long hair just looks scraggily after 2 hours. And I don't think I have the bone structure for a shorter, bolder cut.

LOL - you are SO right!

Why do women do this to themselves? I really don't understand the appeal. It is especially bad when the bob is super stacked and short in the back. There have to be other alternatives??!

OP, I was talking to one of my hair people about this last week. She said they have been out of style for years now, but people want to believe they are a Spice Girl, even though it is 2014 (not 1990!) I thought is was funny - and true.

It is certainly not "classic". Trying to be a sheeple is not classic, in any sense of the word.

The worst is when someone with a humungous head has a bob, and their head looks like a bobble head, regardless of their body size. It looks awful. I know they want to look good, and they think it is classic, or someone told them it was, but they are misinformed.

When I see a bob, I think the wearer can't think for themselves, or they are too lazy to get a new style.

I have seen Japanese women, with their certain kind of super straight hair, with a very specific texture to it (that Westerners do not have) with a beautiful bob, but this was decades ago in a certain fashion forward area. I don't imagine they would ever be back in style.

I wear a chin length bob with bangs, every similar to Katie Holmes, and it is by far the best style for my thick, medium textured hair. I get a few layers put in to create softness and movement, and I do subtle highlights to add dimension. I don't care for too much stacking -- just a bit to allow hair to naturally fall forward slightly towards the jawline.

I get more compliments on this style than on any other that I've tried through the years. I think the key is knowing what looks good on your hair and face.

Since you've proclaimed bobs to be unoriginal and unstylish, what kind of haircut do you recommend? Hopefully something that does not require a personal team of hair stylists or a cosmetology certificate?

Dear OP have you seen the Bob on house of Lies? Then shut your lips.

According to both Harper's Bazaar and Glamour, the bob is in for Spring 2014, but in a shaggier choppier version. Your hairdresser might want to keep up, as I'm more inclined to believe them than someone from Klassy Kuts in Manassas.

Spice Girls weren't around in 1990, and Posh didn't have her famous asymetrical stacked bob until the early 2000s.

(I agree that bobs are overdone and outdated, but get your pop culture references right.)

I have stupidly thick, very coarse, straight hair. A bob is the only hairstyle that doesn't make me want to shave my head. My hair doesn't bend, so I can't wear it up (a bun? Ha!) and it's so heavy that I get a headache if I try a pony tail. I break the thick hair elasticity after one use and I can't find a barrette that will close around it. So a bob it is. And I guess I could care less what others think--if you had to live with this hair, you'd throw in the towel too. At least I won't be bald when I'm 90.

The bob is a classic look. Popular all over the world. What I think looks bad is the long Barbie curls, al la Real Housewives.

OP, why don't you tell us how you wear your hair? We would love to critique it.

I'd love ideas for other cuts for fine hair that's chin- to shoulder-length. Hair stylists keep telling me that's the best length for me, and growing it longer just looks sad. I have about five minutes to style it before getting three kids out the door and off to work. So: suggestions for a great, non-bob cut?
