| I would lean UVA. It’s a stronger student body. |
You are way off UCS is $60,266 all-in for out of state, $50K for DC residents who get DC Tag. Duke is $94,157. That is a 175K savings over 4 years. Maybe $175k is "roughly the same amount of money" for you but I suggest you get our of your extreme bubble. |
Appologizes for the typo. I clearly meant "UNC" not "UCS" |
I'm looking at the UVA website now. For College of Arts and Sciences, it's $80,328 to $85,946 for non-Virginia residents. Cornell is $92,844. So Cornell has roughly a $7-8000 premium over UVA. That's $30,000 over 4 years, not $175,000 as you claim. Again, why would anyone pay OOS for UVA or UNC when there are quite a few very good private universities in the same ballpark that also tend to offer pretty good financial aid? It doesn't make any sense to me. |
They only do it if they do not get in to a top private |
They like the feel of the school They want a school with spirit and sports They want a larger school There are specific programs at the school that they like The school offers specific scholarships They appreciate the more diverse student body that a public school offers A family member went or goes there They want to go to school in a quintessential college town in a nice part of the country They want to go to a school where judgy, know-it-alls without critical thinking skills like you don't go |

I had a HS classmate who chose UNC OOS and another who chose UVA OOS. One definitely could have gone Ivy (possibly HYP). For them, the slight difference in cost of an OOS public might have been meaningful. The other might have been able to go Ivy.
Both have been very successful, one in academia, the other in business. The one who went to UVA lived on the lawn. And they both had great college experiences. Don't knock it until you tried it. |
Why "especially now" UVA? |
| Has your kid visited both campuses? We live in Virginia, but DD is choosing UNC out of state over UVA in state. Cost wasn’t a consideration and they just felt more “at home” at Chapel Hill. The student panel at the UNC tour really closed the deal for her. |
UVA is 76,322 for non-residents, $66,322 for DC residents. Cornell is $92,844 (I'm including at the websites right now and adding up tuition, room, board, fees for each of these---not the estimated travel, personal expenses, etc). So Cornell is $16,522 more per year than UVA OOS or $66K over 4 years. If you're in DC there is an additional savings of $10K a year at UVA so UVA is $106K cheaper. |
1). Because we make $300K and DON'T QUALIFY for any aid!!!! but a savings of $175K (and yes, this is the actual savings of UNC over Duke for 4 years) is really significant. How is this so hard to understand? 2) Frankly my kid hated the feel of Cornell. It was cold, dark, sprawling and the kids were by-in-large quirky. They were admitted to 2 different top20 schools, UVA and UNC. They absolutely chose UVA over Cornell. Everyone is not a freaking prestige whore!!!! |
It doesn’t need to make sense to you. These are the choices OP presented. Adding new school suggestions in this thread isn’t helpful. |
| Is this a joke? UNC. |
| Pleas don't flame me - new to this process as I have a junior - does either school do merit aid for OOS students? |
My son was accepted to the UNC Honors college OOS and received $0 merit. Stark contrast to UF, UGA etc which offered him $. DS is going to UNC. |
