| Which would you choose and why? Are they similar mostly? |
|
Both are great schools. I’d go to whichever is cheaper for the student.
-UVA alum |
| UNC has more NC residents I believe so is slightly harder for OOS applicants. Both are great schools. |
| Facing the same decision leaning towards uva. Oos on both. However prefer uva because of its pre professional programs. Though a direct admit to Kenan Flagler. But not much difference between both. |
|
Neither, go for top10 private
UVA if the only options are unc and uva |
| Chapel Hill is the better school. |
| My kid also has this decision and is going with UVA. |
| We have the choice of UNC OOS or UVA instate. Going with UNC. |
| Prefer the vibe and location of UNC more. |
| Very similar schools. Go with the one kid likes best |
IVA especially now |
| Since you’re OOS for both, what’s the travel situation like? The cost and logistics of getting everything there might be a factor? What about needing to get them out quickly? Sorry, bit covid made me think of this. Some schools closed dorms with 1-2 days notice. |

Not dramatically different. Visit both and go based on feel. If there is a special area of study or XC interest, that might matter.
UNC might feel a bit more "southern" but not much. Chapel Hill is a slightly better college town, plus you have the resources of the Triangle. Because UNC is so heavily in-state there is a larger contingent of local, less worldly kids (which has its pros and cons). NC state government is a mess right now and has been exerting some influence on the school. UNC has a weird complex vis-a-vis Duke. |
| If you are going to spend nearly $90,000 on OOS tuition and housing for UVA or UNC, why not apply to Duke, Vanderbilt, Cornell, Notre Dame, Georgetown and similar private schools? It's roughly the same amount of money, and you get a better education and generally a better experience. I don't understand paying OOS tuition for public schools. |
It sounds like it’s decision time and these are the final two choices. We don’t know where else the student applied or was admitted, but it’s not really relevant at this point. Great options, OP, good luck on the decision! I’d probably lean towards UNC, but UVA is a great choice too. |
