UNC or UVA out of state

Anonymous
I doubt it

But came on to say, for health fields do UNC. If premed or preprofessional for a health field.

Whose is this even a question? Similar quality and reputation.

But UNC oos tuition is 20k a year less than UVA.

UVA and Michigan are the most expensive oos public schools in the country. Why do you think UVA oos yield is so low?

This. Chapel Hill is a fantastic school (but UVA is also great, not a wrong choice can be made IMO). Schools do have different vibes and it depends on your particular DC which one is right for them.

There was a recent thread I think on the vibe differences if you do a search. I’m an OOS Tar Heel, who went to UVA grad so in my data point of 1 I think UVA is preppier, more Greek focused, a bit snobbier with richer kids. Chapel Hill is more laid back, it’s a liberal area within moderately conservative state where most people of different view points get a long (vs an us vs them atmosphere) and the school is much more socio economically diverse (which for many kids it’s their first experience with that). But Charlottesville is also lovely.

It is MUCH harder to get into Carolina OOS than UVA OOS. That data is all public, not looking for a debate.

If the kid doesn't have a clear favorite, I'd let the cost decide.

It’s harder to get in because UNC (by law) enrolls 18% OOS vs. 32% OOS UVA.

What’s the data on applications received to each from oos? Anyone happen to know how they compare? I would think UNC is more popular but not sure.

You can Google this. I know UVA has figured posted. Not sure about UNC.

I was being lazy. Normally I take the time and search before I even ask a question. The CDS would have. I’ll look later at home if no one else posts.

Based on what I know of UNC instate kids, the peer group at UVA is probably more motivated, higher-achieving, etc.

Other than that, not too different.

This doesn't mean it is better.

Yes, and is this true for every public North Carolina school or just UNC? They make a point to admit students from every single county in North Carolina.

The college town vibe of UNC is hard to beat.

If DC plans to major in business the choice is clear. No point in entering a lottery for business school.

I am well aware, I never indicated that the law has a ceiling/ cap on incoming freshmen class at 18% of the total class that starts in the fall. Max. This includes athletes, unless they get a waiver. Every year. School could do 0% if it wanted, but can't go above 18.

I don't know what UVA's OOS rate is, but I am sure one can find it online.

But the acceptance rate, which changes every year, is two fold. There is the 18% cap on OOS but also the massive increase of applications (57%) since 2019 has resulted in an OOS acceptance rate of around 6%. That's it. So as one insta college counselor expert puts it, if you don't think you have a chance at [insert ivy school here with below 10% acceptance rate] then why do you think UNC is going to happen?

Here is the law:

https://www.northcarolina.edu/apps/policy/doc.php?id=789

18% cap is for Carolina, NC State, App, UNCC, UNCW.

There are other caps for other state schools.
