If you are going to spend nearly $90,000 on OOS tuition and housing for UVA or UNC, why not apply to Duke, Vanderbilt, Cornell, Notre Dame, Georgetown and similar private schools? It's roughly the same amount of money, and you get a better education and generally a better experience. I don't understand paying OOS tuition for public schools.
You are way off UCS is $60,266 all-in for out of state, $50K for DC residents who get DC Tag. Duke is $94,157. That is a 175K savings over 4 years. Maybe $175k is "roughly the same amount of money" for you but I suggest you get our of your extreme bubble.
I'm looking at the UVA website now. For College of Arts and Sciences, it's $80,328 to $85,946 for non-Virginia residents. Cornell is $92,844. So Cornell has roughly a $7-8000 premium over UVA. That's $30,000 over 4 years, not $175,000 as you claim. Again, why would anyone pay OOS for UVA or UNC when there are quite a few very good private universities in the same ballpark that also tend to offer pretty good financial aid? It doesn't make any sense to me.
