How do you get enough fiber?

I hate bran cereal!!! (primal scream)

Grape Nuts in yogurt are doable but are basically gravel until they soften up.

Does this really make sense to you all? Eating processed foods to hit a mythical fiber intake amount?

Are processed foods like cereals worse than products like fiber gummies or Benefiber?

I need to consume a lot more fiber, and it seems like unnatural sources are what I’ll turn to if I don’t want to add a ton of carbs and extra calories.

I drink psyllium husk drink, eat 2 tbls of chia a day and then do mission low carb tortilla (18g of fiber) but the tortilla is full of processed shit so I don’t feel great about that. If I eat Ezekiel bread, which is maybe better process wise it’s many more calories and carbs and less fiber, so struggling with what’s better for me in the big picture if I’m trying to lose weight too. I don’t like eating processed food sources for fiber but I often do to keep up the intake. I’ll do Trader Joe’s brand of bran cereal with raspberries and flax and almond milk as well or almond butter on a flax seed low carb wrap. I anlso like the KIND bars which are keto style. They have NO sugar and 6 grams of fiber and low carb so it’s a good snack for me. Avocados daily for me in summer.

Low net carb tortilla wraps can have 18 grams of fiber or more.
I'm no expert; but I'd vote for the gummies or Benefiber over cereals. Occasional granola or something over yogurt is good for adding whole grains; but generally avoiding as much highly processed foods as possible is best. Metamucil helps keep things moving for me and the psyllium fiber particularly is helpful in regulating glucose. Not many fiber supplements include psyllium fiber.

I make this easily. Here are some foods I eat daily. I’m just picking the stuff that has the most fiber and not even counting other foods I eat for lunch and dinner. Usually more vegetables and another whole grain

Ezekiel English muffin- 6
Almond butter- 3
2 cups mixed berries- 6
Dark chocolate- 4
Large apple-5
Dried figs- 5
Sprouted grain wrap-4
2 tsp chia seeds-4

12 oz of raspberries and some avocado

Snack on fruit through the day.

Salad often does not have a lot of fiber. Stews entirely depend on what you put in. Celery, potatoes, carrots, etc don't have a whole lot of fiber. This is why Americans don't get enough fiber. They completely overestimate the fiber content of many foods. You have to go out of your way to consume very specific foods to get enough fiber.

Well of course it depends on what you put in it. I put mixed greens (butter lettuce, spinach), shredded broccoli, red cabbage, Brussels sprouts, corn, sweet potato, bell peppers, potato, and chickpeas. Judging by my bowel movements, it contains plenty of fiber.

Also, if you're eating a small cup of this, it's not going to be much. But as mentioned, I fill a mixing bowl - my salads are enormous (and only like 400-500 calories including dressing)

The gummies are pretty useless. Even metamucil is meh. There is 5 grams of fiber in it, just eat an apple.

There are so many foods naturally high in fiber. I don’t understand why anyone would resort to gummies of gross powders when there are so many delicious foods rich in fiber.

I started eating dates as dessert after meals. I think they're ~6g each

Are you a fan of Dr. B? He’s the best!

Another poster said it’s hard to get the RDA of fiber but I disagree - it’s easy if you focus your calorie intake on the healthiest foods, nearly all of which are high in fiber and nutrient dense.

As to supplemental fiber - some is okay, but it shouldn’t be the fiber solution for anyone’s diet. Psyllium husk etc. doesn’t contain the minerals and micronutrients that fresh whole fiber rich foods do, and it doesn’t promote scfas production to the same extent.

More and more research is revealing the critical role of short chain fatty acids in optimizing human health. SCFAs are created by bacteria in the gut feasting on/fermenting fiber from food.

This article contains an explanation about SCFAs and also some of the best foods that feed the bacteria who make SCFAs for you in your gut. There is no obtaining SCFAs via capsules or other short cuts. You’ve got to cultivate a healthy gut biome and feed that biome lots of - and a diversity of - fiber. 30 plants per week (spices and herbs count!) and 15-20 daily is a great diversity goal.

I lament the diet I was raised on and which I mostly continued eating for most of my adult life. It was low fiber, high fat/sugar/refined carbs and it made me sick. I’m in recovery now, a year into serious dietary changes and feeling so much better. I lapse now and then and eat my old favorite ‘foods’ and they mostly make me feel sick. I’m grateful that my body is at the point now where it naturally craves mostly plant foods and mostly healthy fats. I just wish I’d been raised on a healthy diet so it wouldn’t have been such a battle my whole life.

It's mind boggling to me why people use fiber supplements.

Eat abundant fruits and vegetables (a *minimum* of 5 servings a day, but ideally 7-10) and you'll be fine. No need to count grams as long as you eat your fruits/vegetables.

Because not everybody has the time or the desire to eat 7 to 10 servings of anything in a day
