simmer down. I never said you don’t eat healthy food, I said I eat like I do when you criticized it. It’s not fake food. The Joseph’s wraps I normally eat are made with real ingredients and have heart healthy benefits. The psyllium husk doesn’t have to be something everyone should take but I choose to do so to keep my gut functioning well since it used to have terrible gas and bloating and guess what?! It’s helping, as is my fiber full diet, there’s no disorder there. You don’t have to be so judgmental about people’s fiber intake. |
I eat lots of vegetables, but found it was not enough. I cannot eat most fruits (causes severe stomach pain ). I looked into supplements, but for me high fiber cereal works better. I actually crave it in the morning.
I try to eat other food with higher fiber, but I like starting my day with a substantial amount of fiber. |
Popcorn! Yay! It’s not great for my teeth, but it’s awesome for my digestive system.
Plus greens like collards, and sweet potatoes. And oatmeal. |
I don't understand why adding psyllium husk supplement, whether through a pill or powder (metamucil), is any different than throwing a handful of chia seeds in your oatmeal. Seems there are a lot of people saying "just find it in food". I do eat a varied diet with veggies and beans/legumes, but I'm not a huge fruit eater. As I've aged, I've found I need a consistent and expected way to get fiber and food only doesn't provide the consistency that a supplement taken at the same time every day does. |
It really isn't - the people getting their panties in a wad are just finding a way to feel superior because they "eat real food." It is one thing to look down on people eating big piles of garbage in the form of a 90% processed junk food diet. It is entirely something else to be so high and mighty that you take issue with the wraps somebody is eating and the use of a psyllium husk supplement. Ignore those dorks. |
Like a lot of posters here, I get all my fiber from fresh fruits and vegatables. I am fortunate in that I can tolerate a lot of fruit. If I was not able to do that and I was working under a more confined time or $$ budget, I would totally use some of the other suggestions in this thread for ways to get in more fiber. |
Yeah to me there is no difference between adding a teaspoon of psyllium or a tablespoon of Chia seeds to you smoothies. |
I put both chia seeds and all bran buds in my yogurt! lol |
I’m not criticizing anyone using psyllium, it’s better than not getting enough fiber and suffering constipation.
However the psyllium doesn’t have the micronutrients that whole fiber rich foods have, including chia seeds. So it’s always best to feed the gut nutrient rich fiber sources because those nutrients also play a large role in overall health and curbing appetite because a well nourished gut and brain don’t crave constantly. By well nourished I mean nutrients, not calories. There are tens of millions over overweight and obese Americans who are malnourished despite obvious over abundance of calorie intake. This is why CICO is not really a useful tool in weight management, because not all calories are equal and nutrient poor calories can be eaten in large quantities and never shut off the body’s hunger signaling because the body is screaming for essential micronutrients that are absent from the diet. The key to good health and weight management is nutrient dense high fiber foods. Beans are always a great place to start. |
There are several studies showing higher fiber intake reduces all-cause mortality. Hopefully someone has already posted this, since I’m just going through this old thread. |
Yes we’ve posted it. This one person has some issue with fiber and dogs every convo about getting more fiber in. |
Psyllium can be very dangerous to some of us, that is why. |
Why? What’s dangerous about for some of you? |
Psyllium is usually well tolerated in the majority of people.
Inulin fiber, which is in some fiber supplements and some foods, is the type of fiber that can cause inflammation and irritate IBS. Anyone with bowel issues should consult their physician before amping up fiber intake or taking supplemental fiber. |
So would you agree then that eating a mission keto carb wrap that is made of who knows what but is 20 grams of fiber is not really nutrient fiber but trash? |
