Feeling Guilty

I don’t really see her at Towson (or Maryland if she gets in) as it’s always been her dream to go to school at a large sports school. Maryland just doesn’t have that type of school- the SEC or Big Ten (I know Md is Big 10, but it has a different feel than the Midwest schools). Obviously she will be okay, I was just feeling sad that I can’t give her what she wants.

If she is smart enough to get into Maryland- she would get lots of merit aid from ole miss or Alabama

Regardless, your daughter needs to get her head of out of the clouds and realize how lucky she is. She has a parent who loves her and is present for her, she has been given the opportunity for a great education, she is being encouraged to get a higher education rather than being kicked out and told to work and support herself. She needs to be grateful for what she has and not focus on what she doesn't. There'll always be people who have more than her AND less than her.

OP: Don't listen to these judgmental people. You've set an amazing example for your daughter by escaping a bad situation -- for you and her - -and turning your lives around. You should feel proud, not guilty.

Help her get excited about her options and let her know how much of her life is ahead of her. If she takes to academia, there's always the option of grad school.

Unless your DC is an academic superstar who is in line for scholarships, or you are low income ( substantial financial aid) don't apply to colleges you cannot afford.

If you're a Maryland resident, UMD will provide a fine college experience for money.

Life sucks for your child. my child got into UVA and Michigan and received a Banneker Key to UMD. He had an amazing time at UMD, no debt, a new car and got a six figure job out of school.

My daughter is applying to Smith where they have eliminated loans from its financial aid packages. The average grant for the class of ‘26 was $55.5K.

DP. And Smith is due Monday.

OP, there are schools that will consider extenuating circumstances like yours in their need-based FA calculations. I would try LACs if she wants some state school alternatives. There's a bunch due in the 15th.
But, if she is in VA or MD, there are still some great state options.

Hang in there!

Sigh. Do you see how you could have led with "DD got into OOS schools but forced to attend MD in-state through lack of funds" would have been much more clear? Everything in a nutshell so to speak.

If you had, we'd have been able to go straight to excoriating you for not having had the presence of mind to tell her to apply in-state only
Why risk the tears when a little homework would have told you that with her stats, she wasn't getting enough merit?

Sorry, this is on you. You should feel guilty. And don't you dare take out loans. That would make you even more stupid.

Don’t let your children apply to colleges you know you can’t afford. Poor girl had to write essays for those schools too. Did you use the Net Price Calculators at those schools?

UMD is a better school, OP, than these others. Why do you want her at a big sports school? The academics of Penn State, Clemson and Ohio State aren't as good. You sound incredibly entitled and have your priorities completely mixed up!

She might legitimately resent you for failing to tell her that you could not afford to send her, but only AFTER she sweated blood and tears on those apps.

Ohio State is the top 50 school. I don’t know why everybody on this board tries to talk everybody into thinking that UMD is a great school when it’s decidedly average and don’t get me started on College Park the armpit of Maryland.

Ohio State acceptance rate: 57%
Penn State: 55%
Clemson: 49%

UMD: 44%

You need to get with the times, OP or whoever you are.

UMD is a top 50 school - and ranked higher than Ohio State. LOL.

Flyover state with higher OOS tuition? No thanks.

She is entitled and completely out of touch with what she can afford. Clearly not willing to work hard to pay for the school.
I'm surprised you are going with it after what you have been through.

Umm most international students come from well off families who can pay full price.

So you relying on acceptance rate? You get with the times dinosaur. When people are talking about academic power houses with great sports programs they’re talking about Ohio State for they’re talking about UMD. They’re talking about Penn State before they’re talking about UMD. And if UMD was so great, why are all the kids up here going to schools like Clemson? Because they can get into UMD and don’t want to go -let all the kids from New Jersey continue to pour into UMD.

Please explain why you think College Park is the armpit of Maryland. Also, both Ohio State and Maryland are top 50 schools not average schools.

Have you considered the Common Market programs? The participating schools offer majors that aren’t available in MD, and accepted students attend for in-state tuition. You mentioned Clemson - I don’t think they participate, but University of South Carolina does, as well as LSU and several others. The only catch is that your DD would have to stick with one of those majors to get the tuition, and that can be limiting. Also, all of the schools southern, I think.
