What's harmful is to pretend a school is diverse when it really isn't. |
The breakdown of Wilton’s student population has been posted. Asians are not white. They count as people of color. Slices of MoCo’s population are all present. The fact that it is not majority black and Hispanic does not mean the school is not diverse. If the school was 80% white or Asian, then you could argue it’s not diverse. But that’s not the case. |
Harmful is throwing around "diversity" as a conversational grenade instead of saying something meaningful. If you have an idea in your head, share it. |
What is "% diversity"? That makes no sense. But for low SES: Wootton has 12% FARMS. It's not poor, but it is economically diverse. Only Bradley Hills ES / Pyle MS vertical gets as low as 5% https://www.creativemoco.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/MCPS-FARMS-Rates-2017-2018-1.pdf |
Wootton is one of the least diverse schools in this county. The county is like 30something % Hispanic kids, 15% Asian kids, and I think like 30% FARMs. Neighboring RMHS is an actually diverse HS. |
Yes, Asians are POC, but the low % of FARMs, and black and brown kids in a county where they have a larger % means Wootton is not diverse in Moco. If you compare Wootton to some all white HS in podunk WV, then yes, Wootton is diverse. But, Wootton is being compared to other HS in MoCo, so no, it's not diverse. And I don't consider Kennedy HS diverse, either. |
That's so low! The county average is closer to 40%. |
Wow didn’t realize it had finally flipped to majority Asian. Yikes. |
I’m zoned for Wootton and this is true. Richard Montgomery is truly diverse - you don’t get clumps of Asian kids all over the place- they are well integrated and when you see various friend groups around school and after school, they are truly diverse. When our kid is done with 8th, we are moving to Richard Montgomery to avoid the imbalanced demographics at Wootton. |
The thing is Asians want more security being with Asians. It’s very hard for Asians growing up being the minority everywhere. They’re discriminated, ignored and marginalized everywhere. Many of them growing up with psychological trauma. It’s natural that they want to be in a school with more Asians. When they have the chance to stay together and form a strong group, it’s ridiculous to tell them that their school is not diverse and not reflecting the county population. The school is much more diverse than most US schools. Forcing them to move to schools with 15% or less Asians is cruel. |
Plurality not majority. Why Yikes? Are you scared of Asians? |
Imagine if that happened to any other races... |
wtf? I have lived in the US since 1970 (yea, I'm old), when there weren't very many Asians. I don't have psychological trauma from that. Good grief. I can understand their parents wanting to live in an area with a lot of other Asian, but kids aren't traumatized by going to a school that is < 10% Asian. I hope you are a troll. -Asian American parent |
Yikes? WTF DOES THAT MEAN? I am so sick of the Wootton slander and definitely sick of the Asian slander. Cultures tend to want to live near each other. Asians move to this area so their families can have like-minded peers and a school with high work ethic. The school IS diverse. Many of the Asian students are Indian and middle eastern. Various skin colors and cultures represented. |
Ummm please RM has a drug bathroom on the 3rd floor. Two incidences of guns on campus last year, the Facebook live sex video, the 3-4 fights a day, and a TON of bigoted and racist acts. Not to mention how over crowded it is and how quickly it is slipping each year in best county/state schools. The AP pass and grad rates are lower than Wootton even with having an IB program. And they get the Asian diversity from that IB program. None of them want to hang out with the regular kids. None So yes, the % look a little better, so send your kid there. Enjoy!! |
