What happens if FCPS isn't staffed by the first day of school?

Some classes will be canceled and kids will have to change high school schedules. Teachers will have to work during their prep periods, which will exhaust them, more will leave and the cycle will continue.

There is a vacancy on my team and we have a long term sub. There is a good chance those kids have subs all year. We also had to hire three trainees to cover classroom positions. So people without experience. High school is a little easier because you can offer another period for more pay or not offer as many elective sessions. ES doesn’t have that option. It will either be large classes, subs, or teacher trainees.

So many

That’s not the half of it. My school has 3 vacancies listed (plus specialists). Confirmed yesterday that we are short 4 gen ed teachers and more than 4 special ed teachers. So 3 listings and more than 8 vacancies and school starts in less than 2 weeks.

My kid started one year - I think it was 4th grade - without a teacher. He had a series of short term subs for the first week or two, then a long term sub for about 6 weeks. At that point the school gave up on hiring someone, split up his class, and added 8-9 kids to each of the other 3 classrooms. It was not good.

FCPS is a joke. They hire people with no teaching qualifications.
I don’t know how they are getting away with it.

Our school is fully staffed!

That doesn’t mean there are no teacher trainees.

I thought I just saw a news program that said FCPS was 99% staffed?

And what other choice do they have?

My DD started 2nd grade with a sub. The new hire quit the week before school started. The sub was a recently retired, veteran teacher who stayed for about one month.

Eventually, another career switcher LT sun who was in the midst of getting teaching certification took over but it was a chaotic year.

This happens more than people realize. A few years ago one of my coworkers was out on administrative leave a week into the school year. For the next month, the various teachers in the department covered his classes. Then a long term sub was hired. She was so awful that by February admin had removed her from the classes and put another long term sub in there. Those kids had NO consistency.

Or people planning to retire in a month or so which will then lead to a vacancy.

There are still teachers quitting and we go back next week. There will also be a ton of teachers retiring mid year.

Big increase last year in the number of teachers/admin at different schools who I saw go out on extended medical leave. The mental and physical toll that schools are having on people is scary and real. This can occur at any point in the year and a long term sub slides in and we hope for the best. It was my school, my friends’ schools, my own kid’s school.

Our school has two vacancies (one IA, one special ed teacher) and when I look in the directory, I don't see any residents or trainees.

Yes, this happened at our school last year - several mid-year resignations and long-term medical leaves.
