You don't have school choice except the "magnet" lottery in Silver Spring. Let's be real. You aren't going to move and send your kids to those schools so its not relevant. |
It's well-documented that this is available at Frost, and I think Cold Spring may be the only ES that offers AIM on-premises. I'm guessing a few other Potomac schools do this, but it's not all that common. |
+1 Our high needs elementary school allows 5th graders to take pre-algebra at the local middle school, setting them up to take algebra in 6th. I'm not going to name the school because I don't want the practice to stop. However, I should note that this is not exactly the same as what some folks are describing. Our school allows a very small handful of kids to leave campus for math, but they are not offering a cohort of pre-algebra within the elementary school. As far as I know, there's only one school in the entire district that is offering pre-algebra on the elementary school campus. |
You can do this all over the county, but people are leery of mentioning their school. Plus, it only applies to a tiny portion of the population. But every single time this comes up on DCUM, here is the troll, spewing venom at Potomac, for some reason. What did that part of MCPS ever do to you? |
Do privates regularly let 6th graders take Algebra? My impression was that most are even more reluctant to accelerate in math than public systems. |
Eastern has 6th graders taking algebra. Unless it’s moved since my kid was there, Eastern isn’t in Potomac. |
Not really, the only schools that do this are in Potomac but for some reason, the PP likes to pretend otherwise. |
Even TPMS does this reluctantly but it's limited to the incoming 6th graders that already took AIM at the Potomac ES. |
The earlier poster is understandably concerned that if becomes common knowledge that these wealthy schools are providing opportunities that aren't available elsewhere the county will put an end to it. |

Other schools have been mentioned. My child is one of three in a BCC middle school that did this, but boy was the math coordinator unhappy at having to accommodate them! He refused a few kids coming from the CES compacted math, because the test-in questions were Algebra ones, and he wanted them to get everything right. Which is a ridiculous standard, considering normal students don't need to already know Algebra 1 in order to naturally move up to Algebra 1. So only 3 kids managed to get into the class... which was then predictably easy for them. I am certain that all my kid's CES cohort would have been able to handle it. |
A year ago, someone from upcounty said their school was very happy to place their kid in Algebra 1 in 6th grade. They did not specify the school. It wasn't a wealthy district. These are the types of responses given on DCUM, so I can only relay that, without being able to to share the school name. I have no reason to lie. I don't know why people are so intent on this being only a "wealthy school perk". Jealousy isn't a good look, people. |
Wrong again... The only schools that have been mentioned are a few in wealthy areas. |
First rule of wealthy areas is you don't talk about wealthy areas! |
