Any test/pre-screening/evaluation by MCPS? Or just by individual middle school? Thx...

Most MCPS schools don't do this, but a few in the wealthier areas will accelerate kids with 250+ map-m.

My kid got a 5th grade winter MAP of 270. Should I push for this? (I’m not inclined to)

YES!!

Your kid scored higher than nearly all *high school* students who already passed Algebra 1 class.

We just had a thread reassuring a parent who had a 9th grader in Alg 2 with a 266 MAP-M.

Do AoPS Alcumus Prealgebra (it's free) as a review/preview before 6th grade starts. If it's a total breeze, go for Alg 1. If it's a struggle, go for AIM in 6th and layer on enrichment (like Alcumus Counting& Probability, and the AMC8/Mathcounts prep material).

270 5th grade MAP-M is average or above average for the cohort of kids invited to TPMS magnet.

Here you are, polluting every MCPS accelerated math thread with your usual lies.

The BCC cluster fights tooth and nail against kids taking Algebra in 6th. Some lower income clusters are thrilled to be asked. It’s all school and cluster dependent.

OP, this is on request and test-in only, although I’ve heard of some schools just letting kids in with very high MAP-M scores. Don’t hesitate to ask! My kid is doing well in Honors Geo as a 7th grader, and will go to her high school for first period Algebra 2 in 8th grade. She had a 280 something in 6th grade MAP-M, but her school put up an enormous fuss about letting her take Algebra in 6th. It was entirely ridiculous.

No, admission since last year has been by lottery and there is a locally normed cut-off for the lottery based on FARMS rate.

Wait - I thought the Wealth Potomac Schools did Algebra 1 in 5th grade.

Individual schools do this, not just the wealthy ones. Call the guidance counselor at the school. Mccpta put out a list.

When mine was in 5th, they also scored in the 270s. Our home school doesn't offer this as an option. Sure, they could've easily handled Algebra, but it gave them more time to absorb the material. By the end of the 6th, they were scoring in the 290s, so they seemed to be doing fine. They're headed to Blair SMCS and will probably be in the same class with kids a year ahead of them. In the end, it made no difference.

It's done to keep the kids at the home school vs. leaving for private or other situations.

Some people claim that, but nobody has ever named one outside of Potomac, so seems unlikely.

Everyone else knows how to keep a secret.
