No more free MCPS tutoring

I hope to hear something from MCPS soon...after all these announcements/promotions about free tutoring.

Good! This program is like some weird pseudo-school choice program.

Taxpayer money going to a private company to pay tutors. Instead of boosting our public schools.

They aren't going to put the money into schools. However, there are lots of things they can cut out like all the grants to the non-profits that don't actually help students and are the BOE's pet projects.

Our school said it was funded for next year so this doesn't make sense.

True, but it came as a surprise to tutors and families who already had planned their summer. Even if MCPS starts tutoring again from September 2023, I don't know tutors will return after this.

What are you talking about? It's through a very large tutoring company. They will just get reassigned to other school districts/students.

We did plan our summer with these tutors.

We still haven't gotten an email.

The vast majority of jobs ive been offered have been through MCPS. A few from LAUSD.

May I ask how much Tutor Me Education pays to tutors? I am thinking I will have to pay it myself. If parents offer to pay, would you be interested? Thanks.

Yep MCPS is $20 an hour but they recommend you set your rate at $18 or $15 an hour so unless you change it to $20 or above you will get your lower rate that they recommend.

If parents offered to pay, I would definitely do it but I am thinking my current students are not in that position. I am a DMV teacher who just had an international move trailing my spouse so I was happy to get a few tutoring students that was a lot like my old job. I was actually looking forward to summer because my time zone would be better and I think my students could have made a lot of improvement with me this summer. Oh well...

Do you think it is disorganized that we hear it from individual tutors, not from MCPS (or Tutor Me Education)? I wonder if it is just a matter of renewing a contract and it got delayed.

I received a few (sad) emails from tutors about this.

This is also true of CARES tutoring (both in school and virtual). The official end date is the end of May. It has greatly frustrated teachers as it was very sudden and the decision was made after most summer school positions had been filled. Us teachers have been told not to tell parents yet- though I am not sure why.

I emailed them and they confirmed this. This sucks.

It’s really crummy not to tell parents and leave us scrambling to fill the time and get the academics in. They have so much money.

If anyone is attending this, please let us know if the tutoring issue was discussed. Thank you in advance.

It's odd that MCPS hasn't announced this since it's ending as of next month?
Anonymous
It’s really odd. I emailed the company and confirmed it. At least allow it till the end of the school year.

Is MCPS changing providers?
Anonymous
Why would they do this with so little notice? It’s not even until the end of the school year.
Anonymous
That was my thought as I had seen in previous documents they'd be keeping it but why keep changing providers and making kids lose their tutors who they are connected with. Nightmare.
