Thoughts on cub scouts

I don't think there is a current controversy, but parents whose kids are aging into eligibility may have 1980s/90s references about scouts.

NP here.

There is so much training for leaders now. Two-deep leadership is required for all events, both Cubs & Scouts BSA. This includes merit badge sessions in BSA.

My son was in Cubs. We signed him up on a whim. "This will be fun." He loved the camping and hikes. He loved the "boy led" aspect of Scouts BSA. He went on to earn Eagle last year. It was the best whim decision we ever made.

I agree with a PP that the Den leader(s) and Cubmaster will determine what sort of Pack you have. You won't know until you try it for a year. We had an amazing Cubmaster my son's first 3 years.

This. 100% this

Find out who your pack leader would be and have a talk with them. Or talk to a couple of parents in your pack to see what their experience has been. As you can see from this thread, it varies widely by pack/troop. It's been great for my kids - a warm and nurturing environment, exposure to great activities, lots of hiking/camping and community service projects. No religion angle at all - "Duty to God" was left to each family to interpret as they see fit. My youngest just graduated into Scouts BSA, both plan to go for Eagle.

The time commitment does change over the years. For the first couple of years, a parent has to attend every meeting, but they are only a couple times a month. For older kids, it might increase to every week, but can be drop-off as long as there are 2 leaders present.

The national organization has also changed a ton since we were kids. Mandatory training and abuse prevention programs, widely accepting of all genders and sexual orientation for both youth and leaders, much less emphasis on religion. It's not the Boy Scouts of the 80s anymore.

And your use of "we" is so odd.

Have you read the news in recent years about the pedophilia scandals? Or are you living under a rock?

When did this happen?

Google Boy Scouts and pedophilia

I know that they've cleaned house and changed their policies, but between this and the years of being anti-LGBTQ, I just couldn't do it

No I haven't read anything regarding cub scouts. Definitely not living under a rock.

Watch Leave No Trace on Hulu. They are as horrible and depraved as the Catholic Church. They may have sorted the abuse for now but they only did it because they HAD to. Their whole financial situation and their stance on homosexuality continues to be troubling.

Cub scouts is part of the scouting program of the Boy Scouts of America.

Same organization. But sure, let’s split hairs and pretend they are separate.

It depends on where you live.

Some areas are religious. Some areas have scouts complete the Duty to God at home. And for the non-religious, it can be anything. We do environment.

Scouts learn how to safely handle BB guns. And that learning should transfer to all guns.

What is troubling about it? While yes programs chartered by a church might restrict adult participation that is not all of them. And the best way to help push that further out is by joining the inclusive troops not the ones that exclude folks.

“ As of 2014, no youth member (under 18 years old) of any BSA program can be expelled simply for being gay, lesbian, or bisexual. As of 2015, no adult member of any BSA program above the unit level (e.g. district, council, national) can be expelled simply for being gay, lesbian, or bisexual. However, units chartered by faith-based organizations can still deny adult membership in that unit because of their sexual orientation. Units chartered to secular organizations, however, must consider adult applications without regard to sexual orientation. As of 2017, the BSA recognizes a person’s gender as what is listed on the membership application.”

Yes it is the same organization but for cub scouts you are required to have a parent there most of the time and definitely on camp outs. So even if you do not believe the new rules have cleaned house for Boy Scouts, at the Cub Scout level multiple parents are always around.

So they support but don't support gay or lesbian leaders. That's like saying "I won't hit you but if someone else wants to hit you, I won't stop them." Nice.

They are also doing whatever they can to separate the local finances from the national org so they don't have to pay out to victims. They are despicable.
