A cousin signed her son up for cub scouts so it made me think maybe I should consider it for my 6 yr old.
But then I think of all the controversy around cub scouts and realize there are a ton of other activities and sports we could focus on. What do we think of cub scouts? A little sketch? Passé? |
|
Sketch?
No. |
| It is a bunch of little boys running around in circles and going crazy. It is minimal time commitment, ours was maybe twice a month, but it was fine if you couldn’t make it. How much fun it is depends on the other kids. |
|
IMO the den leader and pack leader make or break the whole experience.
No way to know until you try it out |
| We tried it. Found it overly Christian, conservative, and a little backwards. Felt like something out of the 70's. |
| I liked the idea (camping and friendships) but it was too onerous on me to keep up with changing and irregular dates, and conflicts with sports my child would rather do, that we quit it. I had an issue at the beginning stage about religion, but that did not end up being a problem for us (the pack was not enforcing/prosyletizing Christianity). |
| Wonderful for my son. Went on to become an Eagle. No religion in our troop. What is the current controversy? |
This varies by troop. Ours had no religion and had the parents take responsibility for the religion component in the requirements so they could handle it as they saw fit. My DC’s experience was very positive. It is a very well organized program and great intro to out doors stuff. Ours had an entirely hands off approach to religion (“Duty to God” reference in the scout law/oath is about the only time it came up in meetings). Scouts is VERY strict now about the multiple adults ratio and the safety / background training for leaders. Yes they had problems in the past but that has made them take it very seriously now. We did not have any same service families in our troop as far as I’m aware but they would have been welcome to join as it was just a school based troop open to all. |
I don't think there is a current controversy, but parents whose kids are aging into eligibility may have 1980s/90s references about scouts. |
I think what cub scouts (and Girl Scouts) used to be in the 70s-90s is not at all what it is now. Now they both are lame |
Same, but FYI, it isn’t a drop off activity. Cub scouts requires one parent to be active in it too. |
| Like any club-style experience, I think it 100% depends on the parent volunteers. It is what they make of it. |
| If you’d like to join an organization that basically did a sorry/not sorry on decades of sexual abuse then sure. If not, then no. |

What "cub scout" scandals?
And your use of "we" is so odd. |
When did this happen? |
