Blake at Churchill basketball game

I had a hard time following what happened and who was involved. I am sure all players throwing punches will be suspended, but I’d really like to know the adults involved. Did a coach throw a punch? Parents? And someone mentioned the Churchill athletic director? Absolutely not acceptable.

Sadly, this isn’t even that surprising considering all of the aggression in classrooms- it was bound to spill out in athletics.

They just mentioned athletic director because they already don't like him. (I don't either, particularly.) But he didn't throw a punch in this situation!

Is churchill in black or white? I think White.

If you go to the 1st second of the clip a white boy in black on on the ground, he gets up and bunches the black kid in white which knocks him out of bounds.

The black kid in white comes in from the out of bounds goes down the court and punches the white kid in black.

Video does show the entire incident.

Churchill (white jersey) blindsided Blake player and knocked him to the ground. Blake player gets up and shoves Churchill player out of bounds. Churchill player runs down court and throws first punch.

Pushing happens in basketball .. punching doesn’t.

Blake threw 1st punch.

I personally don’t care about either school.

Well, at least many were wearing masks.

Obviously violence and other bad behavior is tolerated by MCPS, because it keeps happening. This should always be unacceptable and players/student spectators should be kicked off the team after one warning (or less, depending on the offense), on top of getting severely academically disciplined.

Where I went to school, this low-class behavior never happened. We were representing our school and community.

The airel view looks like Churchill threw the first punch.

There was def shoving beforehand, and the refs need a tighter whistle in these types of games, but looks like the white team escalated

Whitman threw the 1st punch. no one cares what you think of these schools.

Violence happens in the halls and classrooms and nothing is ever done.

The refs did nothing to try and stop the fight. In our experience with MoCo athletics, the refs contributed to many poor decisions that would escalate tensions during games.no excuse for throwing any punches.

I agree with this.

Having watched a lot of youth football and basketball games.

The basketball games are more likely to end up in shoving or fighting because the refs let is slide early in the game. There needs to be tighter whistles.

Meanwhile, in most football games, I see them throw the flag very quickly for physicality after the play.

This behavior isn’t unique to MCPS. RJ can’t be the only strategy to deal with these cases but it’s not something MCPS is solely responsible for. Unfortunately these behaviors are symptomatic of our society. Look at how adults act, speak, and drive around here. Heck…There are terribly aggressive and disrespectful people on this board that haven’t been in a school in over twenty years, nor are a product of MCPS. The blame everything on schools game is getting old.

Football and basketball have had fights this year. In the Churchill vs RM Football game, two RM coaches were ejected.

Jeff Sullivan’s tweets should be #we RAISE fists.

No place for violence in any high school sports, including football and basketball.

The referees were running away from the fighting players vs. bringing order back to the game.

Why no email from Principal Taylor admonishing the violence? Why no reinforcement that such behavior is not going to be tolerated at Churchill? Same for the Blake Principal.

Every offender needs consequences. There needs to be clear messaging or what’s the point of rules?

Another day of violence in MCPS. It’s no longer shocking anymore.
