Please don’t put it those terms. Feds just want to do their jobs, like everyone else. Nothing — and I mean nothing — about this is vacation-like.

You are not working, and getting paid for it. That's about as vacation-like as it gets.

You know it’s not a vacation.

If someone told me I couldn't work, would get paid for the time, and needed to stay home, I'd absolutely consider it a vacation. The fact that you can't spend it at the beach doesn't change that.

Do your vacations usually end at arbitrary times without notice and require you to report to work within four hours?

I would be ok with that! I’d stay home and get caught up on projects around the house. Read a few books, try new recipes, exercise….

But it’s not a vacation.

You sound ridiculous, whinging on and on when there are many people, like contractors, who will be truly harmed by this.

"Yes, it's time off with pay, and I can spend it at leisure, or visiting with friends, or otherwise enjoying myself - but I can't leave town, and I may have to go back to work at any time, so it *can't possibly* be a vacation."

And you wonder why people have such a high level of disdain for government workers - it's vocal, out of touch nincompoops like this.

USAID is currently open through October 7th.

FERC until its carryover funds run out.

HUD is using carryover funds to stay open until at least 10/7, maybe longer.

MCC is also staying open with no-year funds.

Nope - I’m a contractor and we have been informed we will not receive back pay. We can take PTO or LWOP.

That's a bummer - but also, now is a great time to jump ship to a better employer. A lot of contractors will be working and getting paid (contract is funded or they can be moved to one that is) or doing training and getting paid (employer wants to retain them and will carry their salary). Smart contracting firms hire during shutdowns.

You're probably the same person who refers to maternity leave as a vacation.

Yes, it is time off for many. It's also stressful and not fun, and so not a vacation.

Oh please. Your argument is that feds cannot be upset about the shutdown. But if one dared to tell you they’re not upset, you’d be right up in here claiming they’re lazy, unsympathetic and the reason everyone hates government workers.

Everyone can see what you’re doing and what your agenda is here. You’re not convincing anyone.

Semantics! Will be so nice, especially with the kids in school!

Words mean things. For instance, “semantics” means “the meaning or the interpretation of a word”. So using semantics, it should be clear to everybody that “furlough” is not identical to “vacation”. It’s fair to argue about how different they are, but it’s offensive and intellectually dishonest to claim that they’re actually the same thing.

You’re an ideal shutdown mom. (Remember the ideal Covid mom?)

If McCarthy ditched the hard right and put the Senate bill up for a vote, do you think it would pass? Maybe that would work.

Wow, this seems like a lot more agencies staying open than previously. IIRC, during the 2013 shutdown only 3 agencies stayed open.

Lots of “looming,” “girding,” and “scrambling,” going on.

You should have gotten guidance from your management team by now. We've been given a list of "orderly shutdown" tasks to be performed on Monday morning; up to 4 hours can be used for this. Our management has said that we can do this remotely if we want.

What kinds of things are on your list? We weren’t given any specific guidance.

That will cost him his speakership and he’s not enough of a patriot to do it.
