Please don’t put it those terms. Feds just want to do their jobs, like everyone else. Nothing — and I mean nothing — about this is vacation-like.

You are not working, and getting paid for it. That's about as vacation-like as it gets.

You know it’s not a vacation.

If someone told me I couldn't work, would get paid for the time, and needed to stay home, I'd absolutely consider it a vacation. The fact that you can't spend it at the beach doesn't change that.

Do your vacations usually end at arbitrary times without notice and require you to report to work within four hours?

I would be ok with that! I’d stay home and get caught up on projects around the house. Read a few books, try new recipes, exercise….

But it’s not a vacation.

Semantics! Will be so nice, especially with the kids in school!

Words mean things. For instance, “semantics” means “the meaning or the interpretation of a word”. So using semantics, it should be clear to everybody that “furlough” is not identical to “vacation”. It’s fair to argue about how different they are, but it’s offensive and intellectually dishonest to claim that they’re actually the same thing.

It’s not offensive. I’ll view it how I want - in a positive light because I’m not going to bring myself down over what I cannot control.
You do you and bellyache all you want.

Anonymous wrote:Can we track with agencies are remaining open by using residual funds? Please comment below, I’ll start.

USAID is currently open through October 7th.

FERC until its carryover funds run out.

HUD is using carryover funds to stay open until at least 10/7, maybe longer.

MCC is also staying open with no-year funds.

GSA is staying open for awhile.

Wow, this seems like a lot more agencies staying open than previously. IIRC, during the 2013 shutdown only 3 agencies stayed open.

Which three? My memory is fuzzy…

You should have gotten guidance from your management team by now. We've been given a list of "orderly shutdown" tasks to be performed on Monday morning; up to 4 hours can be used for this. Our management has said that we can do this remotely if we want.

What kinds of things are on your list? We weren’t given any specific guidance.

DP. Entering timesheets for this week, printing paystubs and furlough letter, setting out of office reply and voicemail with specific language, and if applicable, removing perishables and personal items from office.

Now it’s being reported that the Speaker is floating the idea of a 14-day stopgap to break off some of the extremists. Again: it’s a slim chance, but there still is time. I’ve been through these before. It just doesn’t feel like there will be a shutdown beyond a day or two. Congress can move really fast when it needs to.

This is it—a clean funding bill without the extra Ukraine money. That can pass the House, probably, with moderate Republican’ts joining Democrats. Guessing the Senate will hold its nose and agree. When will this take shape? My guess is late Sunday. Back at work on Monday.

Who are these weirdos still hoping there won't be a shutdown?

There is physically not enough time, people. There wasn't enough time at the beginning of this week either.

Math.

Plenty of time for a clean CR to pass.

Yes, tell me more about the Senate procedural rules that will get a bill through cloture in a day without unanimous consent. I’m sorry but they’re out of time.

How? Walk me through the Senate rules that take less than a day. You know they had to file cloture on the most recent CR last Thursday so they could hold a vote this Wednesday. They have run out of time.

So now McCarthy wants a clean CR. That’s hilarious.

Do we have an actual source for this news, or is it our resident optimist troll?

Also: McCarthy passes a clean CR with Democratic support, he’s voted out. Even if Dems support him being voted in again as speaker (can that happen?), how long is that cycle going to continue?

It’s mentioned on CNN live feed about the shutdown

I’m not the PP who appeared to be taking offense, but I’ll point out that if you write something and somebody else takes offense, you do not get to say that it is “not offensive”. As you yourself say, people can view things how they want. You are certainly welcome to consider a furlough in a positive light. But you can’t tell someone else to view the furlough as a vacation, which is what you did.

You already have been offensive, and we all know it, so don’t claim that it isn’t.

Not quite how it works, but yeah when they turn off civilian GPS and every Uber driver halts, good times.

GPS is a Federal service.

GPS IS USED WORLDWIDE AND EVEN THOUGH IT'S OWNED BY THE US GOVERNMENT IT WILL NOT BE SHUT OFF IN A SHUTDOWN.

EVERY WORLD LEADER WOULD COME DOWN HARD ON THE US.

I can't get anywhere without out and like to map my runs so don't want GPS shut down. But it would be nice if all those that hate the federal government and think it does nothing understood where the basic services they rely on daily come from.
