This is completely crazy.
Funding for federal employees has nothing to do with immigration. Wall, border security, DACA, TPS, immigration judges etc etc. is about immigration. So, this government shutdown is truly a hostage situation. McConnell must open the government and then Democrats and Republicans can debate merit of both sides views and proposals on immigration. It would actually be a negotiation only then. |
Because they want the government to open first. If he wants to pressure the Dems, they offered a 3 week CR while they negotiate border security. He refused. Why did he do that? He can shut it down in 3 weeks if they don't bargain in good faith. |
Exactly. |
McConnell IS NOT GOING TO HOLD THE VOTE, PEOPLE. Dems need another plan. |
The other plan is to let the Republicans continue to own the shutdown. It’ll be great optics as the House and it’s functional Dem leadership keeps passing reasonable bill after reasonable bill and the obstructionist Republican leadership refuses to allow a vote on anything. |
THE GOVERNMENT MUST BE OPENED
THE GOVERNMENT MUST BE OPENED THE GOVERNMENT MUST BE OPENED THE GOVERNMENT MUST BE OPENED |

At this point it is mostly open - they just aren’t paying the people they are recalling to work and of course they are making them work without support staff. Agency after agency has been asked to recall workers in response to pressure from lobbyists and in the interest of minimizinged the pain to people who might vote. Agencies without powerful/ wealthy allies (EPA, Smithsonian, regulatory agencies) are likely to stay closed for as long as the shutdown continues. So for example, the IRS has recalled 46,000 workers to help process refunds but the workers who scrutinize dodgy returns are still furloughed https://www.npr.org/2019/01/18/685829213/attempts-to-make-shutdown-painless-may-stretch-limits-of-federal-law https://www.google.com/amp/s/thehill.com/policy/finance/426123-dems-lash-out-at-trump-for-recalling-furloughed-workers%3famp |
Nope, millions of people are adversely affected--for absolutely no reason--and the shutdown has to end before any negotiations with maniac Cheeto take place. |
TSA is the weak link. It's just not good enough of a job to keeping working for free and as they start dropping out, it's going to be really noticeable. |
BOTH sides have to compromise. |
Release the hostages first and then by all means come to a negotiated compromise that brings us more secure borders and does so in a smart and humane way |
This is 100% on the GOP. They are the ones continuing the govt shutdown. |

The dems can continue to pass bills to re-open the government, except for DHS, and the GOP can continue to sit on it and suffer in public perception. The American public backlash on this has been pretty clear. At some point, the residents of states like Alaska where the Federal presence is strong and the shutdown has a material impact on the economy will force Senators to act against McConnell. |
