Yes this was common knowledge back when they were first married. It was a condition of their marriage. Also involved the beach cottage and books and stuff. Somewhere in the Carolinas. Story at the time was that this woman was his intellectual equal and he needed this time.

WHAT??

They have both been open about some of their martial struggles, including her feeling like she has to fight for her role in the foundation, be respected, etc.

He is well-known for being difficult. He "knows" he's right, and is known to yell at employees, be very disrespectful, and show disdain.

Having raised her kids and achieved what she has, it's understandable she's looking to the next phase of her life and enough was enough--she was ready to free herself not to be with someone like him.

She is also a lot more progressive than him. She will make a huge impact in the world of philanthropy by herself.

And give away her money the way she likes.

Well that’s my dream too. Maybe I’ll be the new Mrs.

That's exactly what I was thinking too -- like "what's wrong with the cottage scenario?" though I don't want him in my cottage. We can have matching ones spaced a good distance away. We can meet once every few days for lunch, then it's back to separate cottages!

Only one of you can go alone if you have kids.

I call it a successful marriage and I am glad they will continue with their philanthropic work together. A divorce is not an end to the relationship, it is only the end of the marriage.

-To be left alone
-To be with someone else
-Gay

What other scenarios?

Your life is limited if your spouse is not on the same page. So maybe to do things you want to do.

She doesn’t need a unicorn or a husband. I’m sure she’d love to be with someone who shares her interests.

I kinda feel bad for Bill that even a billionaire like him couldn’t keep his wife around. Sad.

Money is no substitute for emotional investment.

I think it’s weird when the elderly divorce. What’s the point?

I wonder if it just got to a point where she's 56 and wants to live a little and he at 65 STILL wants to work at whatever project he's throwing himself into 24-7. Like it sounds like for most of the marriage for her it was about raising the kids but now that the kids are grown (youngest is 18), maybe she wants to spend time with her husband and he's still wanting to work at the foundation.

I feel like exactly like this about my husband who is a workaholic (working right now in fact at 10pm!). But if had the money I wouldn’t care because I’d have enough money to live my life how I want.

Wow, did not see that coming, even more so than the divorce. The only person I figured Bill would have cheated on Melinda with was was his ex. I figured it was that he was a frustrating, workaholic spouse who ignored her and stayed until her kids turned 18. It will interesting to see what comes out.

In all fairness, maybe it’s Melinda who is insufferable and has unreasonable expectations. You don’t get to be Bill Gates by being a regular schmuck around the block, she surely knew this. Her claim to fame is getting married to Bill Gates, the same is not true of him.

Of course, now that she has his billions she is cashing out. I have always liked Bill more.

Signed - A woman.
