This will be the last year for the WSYL. MLL is finished. Maybe the PLL should have a youth tournament. However, I do think it should be age not grade based.

Why is it weak? When you have a strict age-based tournament of relatively the same age kids, this is what happens. When you allow some 16 year olds and a lot of 15 year olds to play in 8th grade leagues, then of course there is a different level of play.

It’s weak because you are missing all the very good on age players at the top clubs. There are a handful of players that are above age and prevent these teams from competing. I’m not advocating hold backs, but if you look at the list of clubs participating it’s not the top clubs.

At the WSYL qualifiers, Cavalier 24 went 1-5 and finished in 8th place out of 10 teams (http://worldseriesofyouthlacrosse.com/qualifiers/east-regional-qualifier/schedule-and-standings). Two years in a row Cavalier sold parents on going to Denver but failed to qualify.

LOL Cavalier.

To be fair, Cav did not claim to be #16 the tournament ranked them.

Isn't that the point? If you remove all the players older than the 9/1 USL birth date for all teams, you should have equally aged teams. It would have been interesting for the ML's, BLC's and others to have formed WSYL rosters and play in USL tournaments. Then all of the on-age players could play. Remember, Next Level had a team at WSYL last year and made the semi's but they had to "borrow" the best on-age players from ML to form a roster. They could have brought up some of their younger players but it wouldn't have made them as good. This is what many of the other regional teams are doing by forming area all star squads. Some did it the right way but they didn't make the final rounds.

The DMV teams see HoCo as their focus throughout the year so rosters and practice times are built around that and those class based rules. Then they look to summer and fall tournament schedules. The WSYL falls way back due to its disruption and cost.

I agree a lot of good on-age players are missing but it falls on a lot of shoulders.

Agree with this post. Would be interesting to see an on age tournament where everyone eligible competes. But hard to put together with current grade based teams and tournaments.

First, according to the rules, a player needed to be a regular member of the team. They must live within a 50 mile radius. While the age restriction can be verified it is really hard to this tournament to prove the other rules. Next Level did not really "borrow" players from ML. These are players that had played for NL moved to ML so they had played with NL prior to WSYL. Kids do move teams. I still feel this tournament will not be around next year. The lack of attracting the top teams is only a small reason. This event is run by MLL's Jake "body by Jake" and I think the MLL will fold.

US Lacrosse should step up and create better events for on age kids. They could also pressure the club directors to go to age based organizations. It is simply good for the game. Despite strong growth in the sport for several years, they are bumping into a ceiling. The holdback game really only benefits private HS teams that get the extra tuition. Public school kids are less likely to take 14 years of k-12 school. An undeveloped player with huge upside can always do a PG year which would be a better system for the college coaches so they would support age based. Better for the kids to compete v. kids the same age. It would be a wash for the clubs as they still get the same number or players. Win for US lacrosse to create better events. For years parents and coaches alike complained about early recruiting and it was fixed. The questionable age guidelines could also easily be fixed.

Which makes it even more embarrassing. The 16th Best Team In The World is not even in the AAA or Elite division, and they are still being thrashed..

That is two years in a row that they sold parents on a trip to Denver. Hopefully they won't make the same mistake next year. It seems that parents are wising up, though, as more Cavs kids are leaving the program earlier this year.

Someone said they folded their Cavalier 2026 team. Not sure if that's true, but I don't see a Cavs 2026 team listed for HOCO.

What is embarrassing is your post. Trashing a 7th grade mid level team is the best you can do? -sad. If you have a kid on a better team good for you. The CAV 2024 team and parents are fine. They did not lie to parents and promise a trip to Denver. No need to refund tickets. Kudos to being the only VA representative to even try to qualify. Cav teams used to get put down for playing weak teams and now they play tougher teams and do not win. Which is it? The 2024 team coaches are strong and the team is going to competitive events. I am sorry if your kid did not make Cavs or if you moved to another team and now watch your son sit on the bench.

There is good competition at the AA levels and above - pretty sure the score was 2-2 at half. It's early in the spring - no need to throttle these kids or coaches.

The teams at that WSYOL qualifier were not strong. Cavalier 2024 lost 9-2 in hoco to some club called Thunder. And this is their killer list of events:

Virgina Cup
Shore Wars
Hogan's Hershey

Shore. Wars. LOL. Same old Cavalier.

Why don't you post the schedule for your kid's team? Maybe because Evergreen does not put it on the website??
