| She should go to Stanford -- beautiful weather, closer to Hawaii. NYC or Boston schools would be too much of a fishbowl. |
| people really care about where she goes?? why? |
All the media attention that the school would receive for her being there. Imagine if she did attend a strong liberal arts school that wasn't universally known like Scripps. They would probably be flooded with applications for next year. |
Why? |
Newsflash: that's the norm for many smart, ambitious high school students throughout the greater DC area, including those at public schools. Obviously a president's child wouldn't be attending them, though Obama's Secretary of Education choose public for the 7 years his kids went to school here. |
Because I'm expecting her to go the Ivy League (or Stanford) route just like her parents who went to Princeton/Columbia/Harvard. Even though PBO went to Occidental (his first two years) he knew that he had to go to an even more rigorous school to further his career. I like Howard and Spelman* but they aren't on the same playing field as Barnard/Columbia/Stanford (the schools that she appears to have her eyes on). *I wouldn't say Barnard is that much better then Spelman other then the fact that Barnard is affiliated with Columbia. |
So, as a general rule, you see HBCUs as second-tier safeties? |
NP but objectively, yes their admission standards are not comparable to the schools previously mentioned. |
Are you talking about Duncan? Kids went to school in that horrible Arlington district . . . in a state that rejected Common Core. |
I think Howard and Spelman students (especially Spelman) are some of the best academics this country has to offer but when you are comparing Ivy Leagues/Stanford to smaller private colleges (even Williams, Swarthmore, Amherst, Wellesley) it's not on the same level. Ivy League (yes I'm including Stanford) is Ivy League, that's the whole point of their exclusiveness. I see Malia going to Ivy League/Stanford for undergrad and Sasha going to a liberal arts college. Just speculation, because this whole thread is speculation without an official announcement). |
I don't follow. Malia is not even considering Spelman, is she? |
| I thought she's already chosen Barnard. |
That was an april fool's joke. one apparently, people on DCUM fell for. http://www.the-fed.net/home/2016/4/1/malia-obama-picks-barnard |
Um, no, his kids went to a highly regarded Arlington school (one that's a 10 on greatschools that I would happily send my kids to.) |
I know she's not. I was responding to a commenter who made a snarky remark. |
