Malia - Harvard

She was almost GDS. The Obamas originally wanted their kids to go to GDS, but reportedly the Secret Service nixed it because of security and traffic concerns about GDS' Palisades campus. That's how the Obamas wound up at Sidwell.

You don't think her father's job has anything to do with it? Nothing at all?

If it did then the same can be said for the Bush twins and Chelsea...yet I don't recall anyone ever making that connection. Certainly you don't think she didn't earn it because she is Black right???

The Bush girls were already launched to college before their dad became president. Certainly they came from a famous family (and dad being Texas governor certainly didn't hurt), but it's not the slam dunk of the White House. By all accounts, Chelsea was whip smart in HS, but certainly her dad's position trumped everything. Even the most selective schools slobber all over themselves for the buzz of having a president's kid (not to mention the potential that the parents will come to speak, etc.)

That's correct, it was publicly known that it was a security issue that changed her school choice.

I bet the kids at Harvard are going to be THRILLED by the presence of security on campus, that's really going to dampen the party mood.

Of course it did. Most girls that age don't have nearly the close exposure to world politics and culture that she has had by virtue of having grown up in the White House. But, by all accounts she is a bright, hard-working, respectful girl and that, combined with highly unusual upbringing would ensure her place at H.

It doesn't matter. She would get in regardless. It has nothing to do with her close exposure to world politics and culture and everything to do with her father. I love the Obamas and voted for him twice. But let's be clear. For every other student who had her credentials, Harvard was a crapshoot. For her, it was a guarantee.

How do you know what her credentials are?

It doesn't matter what her credentials are. That is the point. But whatever they are, almost every other student with her credentials would be faced with a potential rejection. Not so for her.

And not so for Bush who left his high school as a C student yet landed a plum spot at Yale then as a C student Harvard Business.

Nothing new under the sun.

She deserves to be able to go anywhere she wants. I really thought it would be Columbia since she spent the whole summer in NYC working for Lena Dunham.

chelsea had higher scores - come on people let's not kid ourselves that malia is the number 1 most hooked candidate in the history of college aps.

the only way she would've had stronger hooks is if she was a boy

Yes. Her father is also president. She can go wherever she wants.

Actually post undergrad -mba, law etc still get the legacy preference.

There's not much of a party mood at Harvard to dampen.
- someone who had two of her best friends there and visited them

But if she had been a son, his name would have been Trayvon.

Once a president leaves office and a child is past 18 the security falls away.

I thought she had narrowed it down to two NYC schools. Barnard and NYU.

My husband is a secret service agent and he laughed out loud when I read this to him. It's complete bull shit. If they wanted to go to GDS they would have.
