I care more about instituting a zero tolerance policy for bringing lethal weapons to school. The kid who brought the gun should be expelled and prosecuted and sent to the Lorton Juvenile Reformatory or where ever it is that criminal "youths" from DC are sent today. And they should find out where he got the gun and prosecute the parents or whoever made it available to him. |
Not necessarily. Has DCPS released a list of the weapons found at the Wilson checkpoints? The unfolding story seems to be that the student criminal simply brought the gun in through a door that was not monitored, so that suggests that the metal detectors are not effective. And what about the knife fight yesterday? The kid had to have had the knife on him in school. I don't think they sell those at Whole Foods, do they? |
| By the tone of the thread I am guessing the kid was white. Because if he was black or Hispanic most of you would be saying they need to lock the little thug up and throw away the key. |
| They should release the name of the gun kid. "Privacy" is a silly concept when someone is bringing a lethal weapon into school. It would be best to expel him ASAP and release his name to shame him and as a deterrent to others. |
I don't care if he's a little green man from Mars. They should expel the thug and prosecute him criminally as an adult. |

I worked with at risk youth and we made a.conscious decision to establish an atmosphere of trust and not have metal detectors. I am not saying thays the right road - but I would LOVe to hear what Wilson is doing proactively to get out ahead of this type of nonsense. From the behavior is see being validated just outside the school doors - not much.
Many studies are showing that multiple stressful.experiences in childhood negatively affect brain development. I would personally worry abut what's happening to any kids brain worried about basic security in the schoolhouse. My sense is that kids at Wilson have to navigate a lot of sophisticated stuff to get by, and it would behoove the grown UPS to set the bar of what's acceptable a little more clearly so kids all kids could study, have fun, and not worry about being challenged to a duel on the way home.or whatever the heck keeps by metro. |
| Sorry - keeps happening. Seems to be a fight a month- some.with serious, deadly weapons. |

You guys can have metal detectors at your kid's schools, if it makes you feel "safe." Honestly... I think the damage from this environment has longer odds of being toxic than my kid being shot by a gun at a school with no metal detectors.
And I am still not honestly over the Shepherd interpretation. What the fuck. Are you from Colorado? |
Two things: stop blaming others for your inability to compose a message that can be properly understood and clean up your language. |
| It is not my problem, that I type the words "Shepherd park," and you go on some kind of free-association spree that means I was saying the kid with gum was from Shepherd Park... And black. No. That is all on you. Get some help. |
Details about the kid will come out soon. Meanwhile, lots of Wilson people know who it is and aren't saying -- good for them. Let it come out officially. |
Sure, you don't have any responsibility for the messages that you post. There is an easy solution for this communication problem. Stop posting. You really haven't contributed anything helpful to this thread. |
How many "at-risk" youth did you have assembled at one place. Wilson has 1788 students. |
| Not many. And I agreed that might not be the solution. But metal detectors do send a 'message' that I would try to.mitigate by building AS much community and character as possible in the school |
You know, of course that everyone with a Wilson connection already knows the kid's name. It will come out soon enough, but assuming the kid is a minor, it won't be published. What's the rush? |
