Gun found at Wilson

Maybe the kid was, or maybe it's just a rumor. I don't think an anonymous DCUM post is proof of anything.

For an incident that happened earlier in the school year. Per a Fox5 report this morning.

Doesn't mean the student isn't still in legal trouble.

Since you asked, I think the prior exchange illustrates one of the challenges of trying to address cultural or socioeconomic issues that may have contributed to the gun situation. Even a letter home from the new principal is dismissed by those with an agenda or whose desire to demonize those they dislike supersedes genuine concern for students or success of the school(s). When that culture of blind negativity permeates then it makes it very difficult to address a situation such as the one at Wilson where a student brought a gun to school.

Now, if you are suggesting that the thread should be limited to only discussions of the gun then this would have been three posts long. Gun brought to school. Update on juvenile offender issued by school/DCPS/police. Letters from principal. But if that's the kind of fact-based update you're looking for then, respectfully, WTH are you doing reading DCUM?

I must say honestly that I'm shocked at some of the pretty casual, almost blase responses to the Wilson gun incident, particularly against the background of school and other mass shootings that the country has witnessed.

I'm shocked that the kid was reinstated at school. If bringing a gun to school doesn't get you expelled, what does??

This can't be true?!

Not true. He was reinstated for another incident earlier in the school year.

If he's a repeat offender, then all the more reason why he should be separated from the school now.

The high and mighty piano prodigy disrespected the process of DCPS.

Here is what Fox 5 DC says:

http://www.fox5dc.com/news/56175121-story

"The father of the teen says that his son may have brought the weapon to school because he feared for his own safety and wanted it for protection. FOX 5’s Bob Barnard say the student had been expelled from the school earlier in the school year and was later reinstated."

The above is an awful and complicated scenario, and I hope they take time to gather facts and get to the bottom of it. At the same its only November. This child had already been expelled?

I hope the child gets the help/protection he needs, but I also hope he does not return to Wilson. Two serious incidents in three months is too many.

The news story confirms that the gun was loaded. Extremely scary.

Whether an teenager feels threatened, disrespected or has other issues, bringing a loaded semi-automatic into a school is a very dangerous brew. He should not return, ever.

It does sound like a terrible situation all the way around and it begs more questions:

--Why is there a kid at school feeling unsafe? Was he wrongly accused in the earlier fight and was the other kid suspended too? Did the school not make known its resources or did they possibly not take serious action with what could be a bullying incident? Or, is that an excuse?

--Is the principal going to listen her students, like this reporter did, and address feeling safe? What about the last two kids who seemed doubtful about safety?

--If this child isn't expelled what kind of message does it send? If he was being bullied, how will they handle? Are kids made aware of consequences of their actions at the beginning of the school year, and are they enforced?

Etc.

It says a lot that bringing a gun to school doesn't "disrespect the process of DCPS".

I think you jumped the gun (no pun intended this time) with this post. We don't know the outcome of gun incident yet.

This is starting to sound like a major fail on the part of the school. If the kid was reinstated, they should have been offering lots of supports, supervision, etc. for this kid. If this kid was still feeling threatened enough that he was bringing a loaded gun to school, then
this kid's not able to apprpriately deal with situations (no matter how grave) and shouldn't have been reinstated yet. School also clearly didn't have a handle on the situation, as they didn't understand how threatened this kid felt, and weren't doing enough to address the situation.

Keep in mind that it was the kid's father who said the kid felt threatened. Also remember that the kid put the gun in another kid's backpack. I can't really square feeling threatened with trying to frame another kid. So, I would take the father's word with a grain of salt.

Unless its the kid who was threatening him?
