I have zero involvement with this situation or oyster, and I'm not weighing in at all on how the school should deal with it. I was the pp who was friends with Justin Coleman, who perputrated similar crimes, and there was absolutely no way for anyone to know. That is how they do it. Just keep that in mind as you enter these discussions. |
Mr. Pena was very charismatic, charming, and extremely "good-looking" by most accounts, I have not seen with my own eyes, but heard stories of lots of " eyelash fluttering" by many who came into contact with him, and that includes male and female parents. As the PP stated, anyone can be an abuser. |
this is CHILLING.. jesus |
Stop trying to defend your child molester boyfriend. Straight men do not flutter eyelashes at gay men. You're completely delusional and pretty stupid too. Another poster already told you to go away. |
This type of personal attack is going to have to stop. I removed several similar posts yesterday. Just because someone has a somewhat different perspective than you doesn't mean he is a child molester or is defending a child molester. If you can't communicate in a civilized manner, please don't bother posting. |
Again, I know absolutely nothing about this guy. I do know Justin, and I know many of his friends from early childhood to when he was arrested, most of whom had children by that time. People who went to school with him, taught with him, and even lived with him. I myself went on several trips with him. You can bet that we sat around and debated ad nauseam whether there were any indications, and we did not find a single one. Of course, maybe there is something that others saw that we did not, but my point is that this is often very well-hidden. Of course background checks should be done, but the absence of a problem on the check does not mean that there isn't a problem. And, you are right, I could be. I'm not, but that is the thing: It is harder to tell than you think. I don't know where that leaves us, I guess in the same place that we always are, judging risks against inaction. This happened in the classroom. Should teachers never be in a classroom alone with a class full of children? That would be a ridiculous conclusion. But, maybe teachers shouldn't be allowed to have kids in their homes alone for pizza night. It is a balance of risk and inaction. |
And no one has yet taken it down from the school's website. How bizarre is that? |
This kind of thing is very popular at school auctions for public and private schools. |
Well, it needs to stop. Absolutely appalling. |
The elephant in the room is that the vast majority of offending teachers (at least at the elementary and under level) are male. Perhaps it is worthwhile to keep all men out of classrooms with children these ages in order to protect our precious young. A clear background merely means he hasn't been convicted of such a crime. These offenders often offend many times before they are caught. I too feel badly for the good male educators who would be hurt by such a policy, but I feel much worse for those children harmed at the hands of such men. |
Why not allow a vetted female volunteer into the classroom? Remember when a male gynecologist would have to have a female nurse with him? That wasn't so long ago, believe or not. |
Someone should tell Oyster to take down this "priceless" gift from their arrested child molester. Seriously. What's wrong with them? |
Is it true that the family of the child victim took him on vacation(s) with them? That's always seemed strange when people would tell me they'd take non-related adults on their family vacations. |
Probably made them feel special that Mr. Popular would even go with them. My heart goes out to all his molested victims. Everyone knows there's never just one. It's not like he was a confused 14 year old trying to find himself. |
Sexual abuse affects children of all races, ethnicities, and income level. "Rich kids" have never been safe from sexual abuse. |
