Did I screw this mom over?

Lesson learned, decline those 'offers" in the future.

I think that mom was a bit deceptive. Op had no idea.

Could you give us the name of the company? I want to order some for ds party.

To all of you uneducated morons, The woman was NOT ops friend. They met at the party, friend offered to make WITHOUT discussing prices. She should have given her her business card or given her the name of the company. I would give nothing since no payment was planned. In the future though, ask how much X will cost.

Please you dame several people offer to do things for free. Maybe in DC that dons;t exist as often obviously but I assure you there are being you are just generally happy.

The friend was at fault here. Offer to pay but I would not do business with her anymore.

Maybe her business is new and was using you to help get word around.

You had no idea this was a business - the baker is at fault too. I think ppl are being way too hard on OP. OP graciously admitted she was wrong without being defensive and paid. I think she's a class act.

The baker is not "at fault", because she never asked for payment. OP found out she ran a business, and paid accordingly because that's the right thing to do. Don't see how the baker did anything wrong at all.

Are you this stupid!!! YOU RUN A BUSINESS YOU LIST YOUR PRICES!!! There was no conversation about payment therefore the women did the job for free. The only wrong OP did was to offer to pay.

I think it's very weird that this woman offered but didn't make clear it was a business. That's shameful! It's a con to make people think you're offering something up out of the kindness of your heart when you do this as a business. I wouldn't have guessed that a classmates mom had a business around cake pops, FFS. And I've certainly offered to help out moms and dads of my children's' classmates for FREE .... because that's a kind thing to do. Not everything has to have a $ sign attached - unless it's your business in which case make that very CLEAR.

This woman - "the baker" - extorted money from the OP. No well-intentioned business person offers up something for "free" and then corners someone into paying. It's kind of gross that the OP was put in this position and I have a feeling the baker realized this and therefore didn't pursue payment. Yuck and yuck.

Now you're just making up facts. The woman never said they were free (money was never discussed at all), and then didn't extort money from her or corner her into paying because she never asked for money. This is probably a case of someone whose business grew slowly/unplanned, and OP found her when she was still pretty fledgling and informal, so the woman didn't know how to handle it bc she was new to running a business. But regardless of what you think about OP, all is other woman did was show up with beautiful baked goods, she's not at fault here.

Betty Baker shows up with the goods, without having received payment, and doesn't bring an invoice of any kind. In retrospect, Sally Stupid wonders if she should have paid for the goods.

Now, let's think about this. Have you ever gone to Whole Foods and wondered if you should pay for the foods there? Have you ever been at the farmers market and questioned whether or not the goods were for sale? Have you ever been in any sort of business at all where things that had value were just given out as freebies (and I don't mean samples)? No. This never happens because legitimate businesses that are trying to make money don't give away their goods for free.

Shady side businesses by "mompreneurs" who don't pay taxes or have proper licensing are about the only demographic where this weirdness comes into play.

Sally Stupid: Make your own damn cake pops (shit ain't difficult), or hire someone reputable to make them for you. Or, I guess, make a friend who just really likes making free cake pops, if that person actually exists.

Betty Baker: If you want to run a business, do it right. Get a license, some actual baking space that isn't your kitchen (Psst... http://unionkitchendc.com/), and take a few classes on how not to be a doormat when running your cake pop business of wonder.

Damn there are some dumb bitches in this area. Seriously, ladies. Get a clue!

I think it is funny.
