College and University Discussion
| UVA has always been a well regarded school. But there are a lot of other highly regarded public universities now - Berkeley, UCLA, Michigan, UNC, Texas, Georgia Tech. And now Maryland, Florida, UIUC, Georgia, the other UCs like San Diego, Santa Barbara, Davis. It's a crowded field, which is great that we have so many good public universities. UVA is one of many. |
It makes you wonder about the mental and emotional well being of some of the people here. |
You could question that rather than consider maybe there is some truth in what they are saying. Up to you. |
What truth? Most of the claims are just snark without substance. And I’ve seen troll posts just on this thread get deleted twice now. Hardly normal, well-adjusted behavior. |
It is true that peer institutions, large public flagships, have improved relative to UVA and that the relative college landscape is a lot more competitive than it was previously. Colleges like U of Florida are now considered peers to UVA. |
Florida is not a peer to UVA. |

That Harvard, Yale, and Princeton continue to sponsor joint admissions sessions with UVA every year suggests that the school is not “declining.”

| I think that, in general, students are casting a wider net than in the past, so schools like UVA are competing not only with William & Mary or Virginia Tech, but Michigan and UCLA and UNC, etc. It will be interesting to see how the Common App impacts yield. |
There is a kernel of truth here. 25 or 50 years ago, the top public universities--UVA, Berkeley, Michigan, and maybe a few others--were head and shoulders above most state flagships. Over time, many state flagships have narrowed (though certainly not completely closed) that gap. This is probably due to a number of factors--most notably, I suspect, the massive rise in tuition costs. As private school tuition, along with the gap between public and private school tuition, grows exponentially, more and more high-stats students are choosing their state flagships over higher-priced and higher-ranked private schools. Over time, this has allowed those state flagships to slowly equal and ultimately surpass many private schools that had previously been ranked above them. Which, in turn, allows those public flagships to get closer and closer to the traditional public powerhouses in the rankings. No, UVA's reputation is not declining. And no, Florida is not yet a true peer of UVA. But the gap between UVA and schools like Florida and Maryland and Ohio State is closing. Those schools are unlikely to ever catch, let alone surpass, UVA (or Michigan or Berkeley or UCLA), but they will continue to leapfrog many private schools that stand between them. And ultimately, they may find themselves ranked just behind the traditional public powerhouses. The excellent but not quite elite private schools did this to themselves by raising tuition too much and too fast. |
Or SUNY of NY. |
UVA is in a three way tie at #24 so it is ranked #24-26 while U of Florida is ranked #30. According to USNews. They are absolutely peers and could switch places next year. |
UVA is not really top 25 currently because of the tie, it falls somewhere below #27 and above #23 according to US News. Being ranked #24 along with multiple other schools is bogus. |
Some would say Florida has already surpassed UVA. |
Correct, these are the correct peers. |
This might win the award for dumbest comment yet. |
