College and University Discussion
Why is that exactly? |
Because if you tie for a score inside the top 25 you are top 25. The school after a three way tie a 24 is not top 25. That’s how a ranking system works. If you tie for first with the exact same time at the Olympics you get a gold medal, you don’t say clearly one of them did not win or didn’t deserve it. |
This sounds smart, ASU is on the rise. |
UVA is top 30 but not top 25. Olympics has nothing to do with it. |
Great point. You really convinced me. |
| The only people that care are UVA alumni and the trolls marking them easy prey. |
|
UVA alum here, and I don’t think its reputation has declined.
What has changed is that those who can afford out of state are not prioritizing UVA attendance or have just stepped out of the race. They aren’t stressing themselves out when a perfectly reasonable OOS flagship will still get their kid where they want to go, and with a more fun high school experience. It’s not fair that college costs are so high, but that is what I see at DS’s high school. |
It’s a T30 school. It’s currently the #4 public school in the US. In what world is that not prestigious?
|
Prestige is in the beholder's eye. I don't think T30 is some magic cutoff. I doubt many, certainly around these parts, would consider, say, the #27T U. of Southern Calif. to be prestigious. Yet many would view the likes of #33 Ga. Tech, #37T Tufts, and #41T Boston U. as such. More on the topic, Virginia's reputation isn't declining by any stretch. If anything, as I believe a PP noted, it's stayed remarkably consistent over the decades. |
| Directly comparing UVA and Michigan acceptance and yield rates have a contextual problem. In Michigan, UMich is the only excellent public school, thus it attracts all the state’s brightest students wanting a public education. In VA, the brightest instate students who want to attend a state public are divided between UVA, W&M, and in the case of engineering/CS, Virginia Tech. Given that context, VA splits their instate applications, admits, and yield; Michigan does not. Similarly, if OOS students want to attend an elite VA public, the applications, admits, and yields are split between UVA and W&M. That’s not the case for Michigan. All are great schools. |
Not that poster but we went on a UVA tour and was so turned off by its odd political stance, we left and didn’t apply. Child attending UGA this fall. |
| I think uva has risen in prestige at least since I was in school in the 90s. That being said, so have a lot of publics like Michigan and UNC. UVA doesn’t outshine them. |
|
The dream job for UVA CS grads is to work for Capitol One.
Enough said. |
+1. This thread has descended into such stupidity because of the trolls that they now are struggling to understand how a tie works. |
I concur with this. For those who consider U.S. News rankings, I'd say that U.Va. places among the top 26 in its category. |
