Is UVA's reputation declining?

This makes no sense. Humanities are surging in interest at the moment largely due to AI. The “humans in the loop” thing is where future careers will be.

I'm from the west coast and never heard about it until many years after moving here and even then thought it wasn't a big deal.

If only UVA had a magnet school in Virginia that it admitted students from with these kinds of skills...

UVA is not alway a top 5 public school either. That varies based on the specific year and the ranking. Top 10 public is also even a maybe.

UVA is top 5 within Virginia.

It’s this. People look at what it takes to get into UVA from NoVa (a six year high-stress arms race) and the odds of getting in after all that effort (middling) and the cost, even in-state, once you get in (high), and start focusing on other options.

As more and more students head south for college, in part due to southern culture, UVA has gone out of its way to extinguish its southern charm.

My kid went to Arizona State University over UVA. Said UVA is primarily Virginia residents and being from Virginia, wanted to escape.
