everyone who pays taxes will leave. Detroit free we come!! |
Agreed. Adams as an independent. |
High taxes don't drive away wealthy people, this has been shown pretty consistently every time it's been tried - wealthy people are the *least* likely to move over higher costs, because they can easily afford them and they gain more by living somewhere with lots of fun stuff to do / interesting restaurants to eat at / etc. Being a multimillionaire in Montana is boring as heck.
(also worth noting that the federal SALT cap going from $10,000 to $40,000 is going to create a nice little window to increase state/local taxes without affecting people's bottom lines - Lawler giveth and Mamdani taketh away) |
There are no GOP Senators who care about SALT and the bill hasn’t passed yet so you have no idea what is going to happen. |
There are no good candidates in the general. We’re screwed. This guy is gonna make DiBlasio look like Ronald Reagan. |
The margins in the House are razor-thin, they're already mad about a bunch of other changes in the Senate bill, and if the NY Republicans tank the bill then SALT caps go away entirely and they come off to their constituents as heroes, so I think they're very likely to hold firm there. They'll pass something and then go to conference and the final bill will greatly increase SALT caps. |
I'm kind of shocked. Honestly the establishment should have rallied around Lander, who I was okay with until he latched onto Mamdani. I wonder if Adams will win now, though it really seems like Mamdani will win. Curious to see if the wealthy move to suburbs or if the finance industry shifts to Miami. |
Democratic leadership are already rallying around Mamdani, it's basically over as far as that goes - they can't avoid him so they're going to try to work with him. His connections with Letitia James mean that Hochul's going to have to treat him warily too, because 450,000 voters are enough to create major problems for her next year. |
Under the iteration most likely to pass, people making over certain income thresholds get no benefit from the changes. So, this will be irrelevant to those impacted by Mamdani’s insane proposed tax hikes |
Exactly. I am far from rich but when the reduction was made it had almost no negative impact on me as I wasn’t benefitting much to begin with due to AMT. Everyone is getting worked up over nothing. That said, this is a mess for NYC. And it is a mess for Dems nationally. Fox News will have a field day and it will be a rallying cry for Republicans nationally. Similar to how AOC is their meal ticket - she doesn’t know when to shut up so feeds them sound bites. Their reporters specifically go to her rather than anyone else. If people didn’t like Cuomo (which I get), Lander should have been the choice. |
I’ve seen him described as following the “theater kid to politics” pipeline, and I think that’s an apt description. It’s a lot of what’s wrong with democrats these days. Nothing he promises is tied to good governance. The whole thing is insane. |
Yes, this is a disaster. I am bracing myself for rampant crime, drug addiction, and all the other delightful stuff that came out of electing a socialist in Portland and San Francisco. I liked Lander and had long planned to rank him first, but shifted to Cuomo in the end when I felt I had no other choice. I'm guessing others in my shoes just stayed home. Disaster. |
I'm hoping to be proven wrong but not holding out much hope for that. |
This is exactly right. And all the young transients who voted for him will just move on while the rest of us with families suffer the consequences or have to uproot our lives and move out. |
