It can still be insulting but it's harder to defend against. I think the main thing here is that some people care about concerts being totally live and others are okay with some recorded elements if the overall show is spectacular. Grohl has earned the right to say "our way is better." Taylor has also earned the right to say "my way is better." But it's interesting that no is stepping up to say "actually backing tracks are awesome and better than live singing -- instead it's more like "well it's understandable that they use backing tracks because it would be unrealistic to expect someone to be belting out singing for 3 hours while doing a bunch of dance numbers and running all over a huge stage." Which is fine but lots of people think it makes for an inferior fan experience. You might not be one of them but people who go see the Foo Fighters play often are. So sure it's an insult. But before you start crying about it ask yourself if you are really ready for this debate because I think maybe you are not. |
Taylor Swift and company are master manipulators. I always supported her despite not really liking her music. I thought she handled some of the knocks thrown at her well andwas glad she continued to find her place. I supported her until I read about the way she manipulates her life story and songs to attack various people in her life. She's willing led her rabid fans to assume some of the guys she was associated with were abusive. Someone published a time line of her songs and events in her life and showed how she used people to garner sympathy and increase sales. Again, Taylor Swift is a master manipulator. |
You are right- Death threats to his daughter aren’t exactly insults. But saying a singer that is using backup tracks isn’t completely live is the truth. If it makes you think less of Taylor that is on you and what you deem important out of a concert experience. |
It doesn't matter if she uses back tracking, her vocals are live. When people say a concert is not live, it means the music is prerecorded and they lip sync. He didn't say we don't use backing track, he said they are actually live. Well so is the Taylor Swift band and her vocals are live she is not lip syncing. |
She is lip syncing on certain songs. She uses backing vocals on many of her more dance-intensive numbers and there are parts where she's not singing or barely singing. Some of what you hear is live but some of it is pre-recorded. Her band is live but no one ever insinuated otherwise -- Dave Grohl was not commenting on the experienced touring musicians on Eras. And Taylor knows that. |
I love Dave Grohl and Taylor Swift both so much.
And I was in London last week where they were both performing. I think this is a big nothing burger. It’s clear Dave respects Taylor as many anecdotes on this thread have shown. And it’s hilarious that his lead guitarist Pat Smear was at her Wembly show and hamming up for the camera and loving it. I think given the vibe in London it would be crazy for dave not to acknowledge the Eras tour. When I first found out FF were going to be in London I was confused about where they might be playing because Wembley is Wembley. But there is another stadium that seats 80k folks which is about right for a foo fighters concert. If you were on the tube on the night of one of Taylor shows it was all about Taylor. There were specific people and specific announcements advising people how to get to her show, what train to take and what not to take. It wasn’t like that for foo fighters but then again I’m not sure where they were playing and maybe it wasn’t accessible by tube anyway. There were big signs welcoming Taylor to the UK and I didn’t see that for the Foo Fighters. The only reason I knew they were playing in London is because I’m a fan and follow a bunch of Foo Fighters sites on insta. I think there was another huge tour in town and Dave was acknowledging that. His joke surprised me a little, and maybe was a little distasteful, but I don’t think it was really a big diss. Let’s face it, they are too very different shows from very talented people with huge fan bases and ridiculous success. I think he was acknowledging that there are errors in any show and playing on words. I didn’t necessarily think it was a huge dig on Taylor. I think she was right to defend her band and all the performers who are working their asses off live. But I don’t see them having any big beef. |
Wrong. Doesn’t matter either way us Foo Fighters fans, and David Grohl fans are disappointed in him being a dick. |
Uh not wrong. It is a known fact. It's also industry standard. Here's a (rave!) review of Taylor's Eras tour but an established music journalist who notes early in the review that Taylor relies on backing tracks particularly for songs that require a higher range : https://www.slantmagazine.com/live-reviews/taylor-swift-eras-tour-los-angeles-live-review/ And here's the Daily Beast coming to Taylor's defense regarding Grohl's comments but acknowledging that obviously she uses backing tracks in her show and sometimes it is obvious to fans at shows (who don't mind!): https://www.thedailybeast.com/taylor-swift-claps-back-at-dave-grohlbut-does-he-have-a-point You can argue it is reasonable for her to use these tracks and that everyone uses them and that they don't take away from the show. But you can't sit there and say she doesn't use these tracks or that she is 100% live on tour because she is not. |
Not sure why the long reply. I was directly responding to the poster before me who said that it was not insulting because it was true. |
This is true. Do I like her songs? Yes. But who cares about breakups and stuff. I don't even know who her songs are about. Nobody else should either. But she makes sure everyone does, so like you say, that is pretty sucky and horrible. And her fans are the worst. Her fans make Philly fans look good. |
fixed it for you. I don't hate her I just hate the drama she and her team create every single time she has a tour or is introducing a new (or barely new) album. |
You summed it up perfectly. Her fans would murder for her and she, like the orange man she and most of us hate, seem to live to stir up their crowd. The article mentioned above also covered friends she dropped and assumed reasons for why she booted them. She's very young and lives in such a bubble that she lives too much for her fame. I think the reality is no one can get this wealthy, this famous, this popular without becoming a dictator. |
I’m not. The truth is out there, if you don’t like it, the ostrich approach (bury your head in the sand) works for a bit, but eventually it will sink in that she isn’t entirely live. |
Lol. No, we're really not. Most Foo fans are chill adults in theirs 40s that grew on grunge. We're not going to be disappointed in our of rock heros for having a little fun ragging on a pop star. I would bet 99% of Dave fans would chuckle along with him. Have you been to one of his shows? He just shoots the sh#t, off the cuff, between songs half the time. When they were at Merriweather a few years ago, he just made fun of the maryland accent for the entire show. |
Oh that sounds hilarious -- sorry I missed that show - person with a maryland accent who has a better sense of humor than Taylor Swift |
